Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Xbox app stuck on loading/splash screen indefinitely
  • Game Pass games fail to install with "something went wrong"
  • Xbox social features not loading — friends list empty
  • "Gaming Services" error preventing game installations
  • Xbox app opens but shows blank white or black screen
  • Can't sign into Xbox app with Microsoft account

Common Causes

  • Gaming Services package corrupted or outdated
  • Xbox Identity Provider not installed or broken
  • Microsoft Store cache preventing Xbox app updates
  • Xbox app cache or local state corrupted
  • Network issues blocking Xbox Live authentication
  • Windows Firewall blocking Xbox app connections

Solutions

Solution 1: Repair Gaming Services

  1. 1Open PowerShell as Administrator
  2. 2Run: Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppxManifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode}
  3. 3If that fails, uninstall and reinstall: Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
  4. 4Then open Microsoft Store and search for "Gaming Services" to reinstall
  5. 5Restart your PC after reinstalling

Solution 2: Reset Xbox App

  1. 1Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps
  2. 2Find "Xbox" app > three dots > Advanced options
  3. 3Click "Repair" — if that doesn't work, click "Reset"
  4. 4Sign back into the Xbox app with your Microsoft account

Solution 3: Clear Xbox App Cache

  1. 1Press Win+R and type: wsreset.exe (this clears Store cache too)
  2. 2Wait for the Store to open, then close it
  3. 3Navigate to %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.XboxApp_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache
  4. 4Delete all contents of the LocalCache folder
