You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Volume icon missing from system tray
  • Network/Wi-Fi icon not showing in taskbar
  • Battery icon disappeared on laptop
  • All system tray icons gone except clock

  • System tray overflow area empty

Common Causes

  • System icons toggled off in taskbar settings
  • Taskbar corner overflow hiding icons
  • IconStreams registry cache corrupted

Solutions

Solution 1: Re-enable System Tray Icons

  1. 1Right-click taskbar > Taskbar settings
  2. 2Windows 11: expand "Taskbar corner icons" — enable Network, Volume, Battery
  3. 3Windows 10: scroll to Notification area > "Turn system icons on or off"
  4. 4Enable: Volume, Network, Power, Clock, etc.
  5. 5Also check: "Select which icons appear on the taskbar"
  6. 6Toggle ON for any apps you want visible in the tray

Solution 2: Fix Taskbar Corner Overflow

  1. 1Click the ^ arrow in the system tray to see hidden icons
  2. 2Drag icons you want visible OUT of the overflow area onto the taskbar
  3. 3Windows 11: Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar corner overflow
  4. 4Toggle ON for each app you want always visible
  5. 5If overflow arrow is missing: restart Windows Explorer via Task Manager

Solution 3: Reset Icon Cache

  1. 1If icons are corrupted or wrong: reset the icon cache
  2. 2Open Command Prompt as Admin
  3. 3Run: taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
  4. 4Run: del /f /s /q %localappdata%\IconCache.db
  5. 5Run: del /f /s /q %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*
  6. 6Run: start explorer.exe
  7. 7Icons will rebuild — may take a moment for all to reappear
