How to Fix Windows Boot Loop

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "Could not find the recovery environment" error
  • Reset this PC option grayed out or fails
  • Recovery partition not visible in Disk Management
  • "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing" error
  • Advanced Startup options not available
  • Recovery partition accidentally deleted during disk management

Common Causes

  • Recovery partition deleted during disk cleanup or partitioning
  • Third-party partition software removed recovery partition
  • Windows Update failed to maintain recovery environment
  • Disk cloning did not include recovery partition
  • WinRE disabled or path broken in configuration
  • Disk conversion (MBR to GPT) removed recovery data

Solutions

Solution 1: Check and Re-enable WinRE

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Run: reagentc /info
  3. 3If it shows "Windows RE status: Disabled":
  4. 4Run: reagentc /enable
  5. 5If it succeeds: the recovery environment is restored
  6. 6Run: reagentc /info again to verify status is "Enabled"

Solution 2: Rebuild Recovery from Windows Installation Media

  1. 1If reagentc /enable fails: you need the recovery image
  2. 2Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft
  3. 3Create a bootable USB or download the ISO
  4. 4Mount the ISO > navigate to sources\install.wim
  5. 5Extract the winre.wim file using DISM or 7-Zip
  6. 6Copy winre.wim to C:\Recovery\WindowsRE\
  7. 7Run: reagentc /setreimage /path C:\Recovery\WindowsRE
  8. 8Run: reagentc /enable

Solution 3: Create Recovery Drive as Alternative

  1. 1If recovery partition can't be restored:
  2. 2Search "Create a recovery drive" in Start
  3. 3Check "Back up system files to the recovery drive"
  4. 4Insert a USB drive (16 GB minimum)
  5. 5Follow the wizard — this creates a bootable recovery USB
  6. 6Store this USB safely — you can boot from it if Windows fails
