How to Fix Black Screen on Startup

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Login screen appears but clicking the password field does nothing
  • Lock screen image shows but swiping up or clicking doesn't reveal login
  • Keyboard input not accepted at the login screen
  • Login screen loads but mouse cursor is frozen
  • Screen shows user account but "Sign in" button doesn't respond
  • Login screen freezes after entering password — spinning dots forever

Common Causes

  • Windows Credential Provider or login UI process (LogonUI.exe) crashed
  • Corrupted user profile preventing login initialization
  • GPU driver failing to render the login screen properly
  • Third-party credential provider (VPN, fingerprint) conflicting
  • Corrupted Windows login cache or NGC folder
  • Fast Startup causing incomplete session initialization

Solutions

Solution 1: Force Restart and Basic Fixes

  1. 1Press Ctrl+Alt+Del — if it responds, select "Restart" or "Task Manager"
  2. 2If Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work: hold the power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown
  3. 3Boot again — the problem may be a one-time glitch
  4. 4If it recurs, try: press Ctrl+Alt+Del → click the power icon → Restart
  5. 5Wait 2-3 minutes before force-shutting down — login may be loading slowly
  6. 6Try pressing Enter, Tab, or Space to dismiss the lock screen
  7. 7Disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse, then restart

Solution 2: Boot into Safe Mode

  1. 1Force shutdown 3 times during boot to trigger Windows Recovery:
  2. 2Power on → wait for Windows logo → hold power button → repeat 3 times
  3. 3Select Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Restart
  4. 4Press F4 for Safe Mode or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking
  5. 5If login works in Safe Mode, the issue is a driver or startup program:
  6. 6Uninstall recently installed software or drivers
  7. 7Disable third-party credential providers in Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options
  8. 8Run: sfc /scannow in Safe Mode to repair system files

Solution 3: Fix Login Infrastructure

  1. 1In Safe Mode or Recovery, open Command Prompt:
  2. 2Reset the NGC folder (PIN/Windows Hello cache):
  3. 3takeown /f C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC /r /d y
  4. 4icacls C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC /grant administrators:F /t
  5. 5rd /s /q C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC
  6. 6This forces re-setup of Windows Hello/PIN on next login
  7. 7Disable Fast Startup: powercfg /hibernate off
  8. 8Create a new user account if the current profile is corrupted:
  9. 9net user TempAdmin Password123 /add && net localgroup administrators TempAdmin /add
