You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Game Bar record button is grayed out
  • "Gaming features aren't available for Windows desktop" message
  • Win+G opens Game Bar but recording won't start
  • Recording starts but produces 0-byte or corrupted file
  • Game Bar overlay doesn't appear in full-screen games

  • Game Bar or Game DVR disabled in Settings
  • GPU doesn't support hardware encoding (required for recording)
  • Outdated or incompatible graphics driver
  • Game running in exclusive full-screen mode (unsupported)
  • Game Bar app corrupted or outdated
  • Recording to a drive with insufficient space or wrong format

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Game Bar and Recording

  1. 1Settings → Gaming → Game Bar
  2. 2Turn ON "Allow your controller to open Game Bar"
  3. 3Turn ON "Record game clips, screenshots..."
  4. 4Settings → Gaming → Captures
  5. 5Ensure "Record what happened" is ON (if supported)
  6. 6Set "Max recording length" as desired
  7. 7Choose recording location with sufficient free space
  8. 8Try Win+Alt+R to start recording directly

Solution 2: Fix Graphics Driver and Hardware Encoding

  1. 1Game Bar recording requires GPU hardware encoding:
  2. 2Update graphics driver to latest from manufacturer (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel)
  3. 3Device Manager → Display adapters → right-click GPU → Update driver
  4. 4Or download from nvidia.com / amd.com / intel.com
  5. 5After update: restart PC → retry recording
  6. 6If GPU is very old: it may not support hardware encoding
  7. 7Check: Game Bar → Settings (gear icon) → show compatibility info
  8. 8For games in exclusive fullscreen: switch to "Borderless Windowed" mode

Solution 3: Reset Game Bar App

  1. 1Settings → Apps → Installed apps → "Xbox Game Bar"
  2. 2Click Advanced options → Repair
  3. 3If repair doesn't help → Reset
  4. 4Also update from Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates
  5. 5If completely broken: PowerShell (Admin):
  6. 6Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay | Remove-AppxPackage
  7. 7Then reinstall from Microsoft Store: search "Xbox Game Bar"
  8. 8Alternative recording: use Snipping Tool screen recording or OBS Studio
