How to Fix Xbox Game Bar / Game DVR Not Recording on Windows

Game Bar recording greyed out, captures not saving, or "Recording is unavailable" error? Fix Xbox Game Bar recording on Windows 10 and 11.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "Recording is unavailable" when pressing Win+Alt+R
  • Game Bar opens but record button is greyed out
  • Recording starts but saves as 0-byte or corrupted file
  • Game Bar says "Gaming features aren't available for this app"
  • Background recording (last 30 seconds) not capturing
  • FPS drops significantly when recording

Common Causes

  • Game Bar disabled in Windows Settings
  • GPU doesn't support hardware encoding (NVENC, AMF, Quick Sync)
  • App running in unsupported mode (some fullscreen exclusive games)
  • Captures folder full or on a drive with no space
  • Game Bar overlay disabled by game anti-cheat
  • Older GPU without hardware encoder support

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Game Bar Recording

  1. 1Settings → Gaming → Game Bar → toggle ON
  2. 2Settings → Gaming → Captures:
  3. 3Toggle "Record what happened" ON (for background recording)
  4. 4Set capture location — ensure the drive has free space
  5. 5Set recording length, quality, and audio settings
  6. 6Use Win+G to open Game Bar → check recording widget is visible

Solution 2: Fix "Recording Unavailable"

  1. 1This usually means no hardware encoder was detected:
  2. 2Update GPU driver — this is the most common fix
  3. 3Check GPU compatibility:
  4. 4NVIDIA: GTX 600+ series (Kepler or newer)
  5. 5AMD: RX 400+ series or R7/R9 series (GCN or newer)
  6. 6Intel: HD 4000+ (Haswell or newer)
  7. 7If GPU is too old: use OBS Studio instead (supports software encoding)

Solution 3: Fix Black Screen or Corrupt Recordings

  1. 1If recordings are black:
  2. 2Try "Borderless Windowed" mode instead of Fullscreen Exclusive in the game
  3. 3Game Bar captures better in windowed/borderless mode
  4. 4If recordings corrupt: change save location to a different drive
  5. 5Reduce recording quality: Settings → Gaming → Captures → lower quality/FPS
  6. 6For heavy games: 30 FPS recording uses less resources than 60
