How to Fix Screen Recording Not Working in Windows on Windows

Can't record screen in Windows? Xbox Game Bar recording grayed out? Snipping Tool screen recording failing? OBS or other recording software not capturing? Fix screen recording issues on Windows.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Xbox Game Bar "Record" button grayed out or missing
  • Snipping Tool video recording fails to start
  • Screen recording captures black screen instead of content
  • Recording starts but produces 0-byte or corrupted file
  • Game Bar says "Gaming features aren't available for Windows desktop"
  • Third-party recording software (OBS, etc.) shows black screen

Common Causes

  • GPU drivers outdated or not supporting hardware encoding
  • Game Bar disabled in Settings or by Group Policy
  • Application being recorded doesn't support Game Bar capture
  • Hardware encoding (NVENC/AMF/QuickSync) not available
  • DRM-protected content blocking screen capture
  • Insufficient GPU/CPU resources for real-time encoding

Solutions

Solution 1: Fix Xbox Game Bar Recording

  1. 1Enable Game Bar:
  2. 2Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar → toggle ON
  3. 3Enable background recording:
  4. 4Settings → Gaming → Captures
  5. 5Toggle on "Record what happened" (background recording)
  6. 6Set video quality and max recording length
  7. 7To record: press Win+G to open Game Bar
  8. 8Click the Record button (circle icon) in Capture widget
  9. 9Or press Win+Alt+R to start/stop recording
  10. 10Note: Game Bar cannot record File Explorer or the Desktop itself
  11. 11It can only record applications and games

Solution 2: Fix Black Screen or Failed Recordings

  1. 1Update GPU drivers (most common fix):
  2. 2NVIDIA: geforce.com/drivers
  3. 3AMD: amd.com/en/support
  4. 4Intel: intel.com/content/www/us/en/download-center
  5. 5Install the latest driver — includes encoding support
  6. 6If Game Bar recording grayed out:
  7. 7Your GPU may not support hardware encoding
  8. 8Check: dxdiag → Display tab → look for Feature Levels
  9. 9Need at least Direct3D 12 for Game Bar recording
  10. 10For OBS black screen:
  11. 11Try different capture methods: Window Capture, Display Capture, Game Capture
  12. 12Run OBS as administrator
  13. 13Match OBS GPU to the app's GPU (Settings → Advanced → GPU)

Solution 3: Use Snipping Tool Recording (Windows 11)

  1. 1Windows 11 Snipping Tool has built-in screen recording:
  2. 2Open Snipping Tool → click the video camera icon
  3. 3Click "New" → select screen area → click "Start"
  4. 4This records the selected screen area (not just apps)
  5. 5Can record desktop, File Explorer, anything visible
  6. 6If Snipping Tool recording not available:
  7. 7Ensure Windows 11 22H2 or later
  8. 8Update Snipping Tool from Microsoft Store
  9. 9Alternative free recorders:
  10. 10OBS Studio (obs-project.com) — most powerful, free
  11. 11ShareX — free, open source, includes screen recording
  12. 12PowerPoint — Insert → Screen Recording (already installed with Office)
