Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix High CPU Usage

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Win+G opens Game Bar but no FPS counter visible
  • Performance widget removed from Game Bar overlay
  • FPS counter shows briefly then disappears during gameplay
  • Performance overlay works in some games but not others
  • Game Bar overlay completely invisible during full-screen games
  • FPS counter shows 0 or N/A instead of actual frame rate

Common Causes

  • Performance overlay widget not pinned in Game Bar
  • Game Bar overlay disabled for specific games
  • Full-screen exclusive mode blocking Game Bar overlay
  • Graphics driver not supporting Game Bar performance counters
  • Game Bar app outdated or corrupted
  • Anti-cheat software blocking Game Bar overlay injection

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable FPS Counter in Game Bar

  1. 1Open Game Bar: press Win+G
  2. 2Click the Performance widget icon (looks like a monitor with graph)
  3. 3If not visible: click the widget menu (three dots or widget selector)
  4. 4Find "Performance" and click to add it
  5. 5In the Performance widget:
  6. 6Click the pin icon to keep it visible during gameplay
  7. 7Click "Perf" or gear icon to choose which stats to show
  8. 8Enable: FPS, CPU, GPU, RAM as desired
  9. 9For the overlay to persist in games:
  10. 10Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar
  11. 11Toggle ON "Enable Xbox Game Bar"
  12. 12Also: Settings → Gaming → Game Mode → toggle ON

Solution 2: Fix Game Bar Overlay Visibility

  1. 1Some games block overlays in full-screen exclusive mode:
  2. 2Switch game to "Borderless Windowed" or "Windowed Fullscreen"
  3. 3This allows Game Bar overlay to render on top
  4. 4In game graphics settings: change Fullscreen to Borderless
  5. 5If overlay shows but FPS reads 0:
  6. 6Update graphics driver to latest version
  7. 7NVIDIA: geforce.com/drivers
  8. 8AMD: amd.com/en/support
  9. 9Intel: intel.com/download-center
  10. 10For games with anti-cheat (Valorant, Fortnite, etc.):
  11. 11Some anti-cheat blocks overlay injection
  12. 12Use the GPU driver built-in FPS counter instead:
  13. 13NVIDIA: GeForce Experience → Settings → HUD Layout → FPS Counter
  14. 14AMD: Alt+R → Performance → Show Metrics Overlay

Solution 3: Reset or Reinstall Game Bar

  1. 1If Game Bar is broken:
  2. 2Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Xbox Game Bar
  3. 3⋯ → Advanced options → Repair
  4. 4If Repair doesnt help: click Reset
  5. 5If still broken — reinstall:
  6. 6PowerShell as Admin:
  7. 7Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay | Remove-AppxPackage
  8. 8Open Microsoft Store → search "Xbox Game Bar" → Install
  9. 9Also reinstall the Game Bar plugin:
  10. 10Get-AppxPackage *XboxGameOverlay* | Remove-AppxPackage
  11. 11Reinstall from Store
  12. 12After reinstall: open Game Bar (Win+G)
  13. 13Re-pin the Performance widget
  14. 14Test in a game
