How to Fix Slow Computer

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Application opens briefly then immediately closes
  • "[App] has stopped working" error message on launch
  • Program window flashes for a split second then disappears
  • App shows a spinning cursor then nothing happens
  • Works in Safe Mode but crashes in normal Windows
  • Crash started after a Windows Update or driver update
  • Multiple applications crashing on launch, not just one

Common Causes

  • Corrupted application data or configuration files
  • Missing or corrupted Visual C++ Redistributables
  • Missing .NET Framework version required by the application
  • Antivirus blocking the application executable
  • Corrupted user profile affecting app settings
  • Incompatible display driver causing GPU-accelerated apps to crash
  • Application requires administrator privileges but UAC is blocking it

Solutions

Solution 1: Repair Visual C++ Redistributables

  1. 1Many apps depend on Visual C++ Runtime libraries
  2. 2Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps
  3. 3Search for "Visual C++" — you should see multiple versions (2015-2022, 2013, 2012, etc.)
  4. 4For each one: click three dots → Modify → Repair
  5. 5If none are installed: download "Visual C++ Redistributable All-in-One" from Microsoft
  6. 6Install both x86 and x64 versions
  7. 7Restart and try launching the application again

Solution 2: Run as Administrator and Check Compatibility

  1. 1Right-click the application shortcut → Properties
  2. 2Go to the Compatibility tab
  3. 3Check "Run this program as an administrator"
  4. 4Try "Run this program in compatibility mode for" → select Windows 8 or Windows 7
  5. 5Click Apply → OK and try launching again
  6. 6Some older applications require admin rights or compatibility mode to function on Windows 10/11

Solution 3: Clear Application Data

  1. 1Press Win+R → type %appdata% → Enter
  2. 2Find the folder for the crashing application → rename it (e.g., add .backup)
  3. 3Also check %localappdata% for the app folder and rename it
  4. 4Launch the application — it will create fresh default settings
  5. 5If it works: the old configuration was corrupted
  6. 6You can copy specific settings back from the backup folder if needed

Solution 4: Check Event Viewer for Crash Details

  1. 1Press Win+R → type eventvwr.msc → Enter
  2. 2Go to Windows Logs → Application
  3. 3Look for red "Error" entries with source "Application Error" at the time of the crash
  4. 4The "Faulting module" field tells you what DLL or component caused the crash
  5. 5Common culprits: ntdll.dll (system issue), d3d11.dll (GPU driver), msvcrt.dll (C++ runtime)
  6. 6Search the faulting module name online for targeted fixes
