Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix 100% Disk Usage

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "Not enough space to create the volume shadow copy" error
  • File History says backup drive is full
  • System Image Backup fails with error 0x80780119
  • Backup starts but never completes
  • Backup drive filling up faster than expected
  • "Windows Backup did not complete successfully" notification

Common Causes

  • Backup drive genuinely full
  • File History not cleaning old versions
  • System Image including unnecessary drives
  • Shadow copy storage limit too small
  • Backup set corrupted preventing incremental backups
  • Large files (VMs, videos) inflating backup size

Solutions

Solution 1: Clean Up Backup Storage

  1. 1For File History: Settings > Update & Security > Backup
  2. 2Click "More options" > "See advanced settings"
  3. 3In File History: click "Advanced settings"
  4. 4Under "Keep saved versions" change to "Until space is needed"
  5. 5Click "Clean up versions" to delete old backup versions
  6. 6This frees space on the backup drive

Solution 2: Fix System Image Backup

  1. 1Go to Control Panel > Backup and Restore (Windows 7)
  2. 2Click "Create a system image"
  3. 3UNCHECK any data drives you don't need in the image
  4. 4Only include C: (system drive) and EFI partition
  5. 5Ensure the target drive has at least 1.5x the used space on C:
  6. 6Delete old system images: on backup drive, delete "WindowsImageBackup" folder

Solution 3: Increase Shadow Copy Storage

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Run: vssadmin list shadowstorage (check current limits)
  3. 3Run: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /for=C: /on=C: /maxsize=20GB
  4. 4Adjust the size based on your drive capacity
  5. 5If shadow copies are corrupted: vssadmin delete shadows /all
  6. 6This clears all restore points — they will be recreated
