How to Fix Computer Freezing and Hanging

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Snapping a window to one side doesn't show suggestions for the other side
  • Snap Assist worked before but stopped showing suggestions
  • Snap layouts (hover over maximize) work but Snap Assist doesn't
  • Only one window snaps — no prompt to fill remaining space
  • Snap Assist briefly flashes then disappears
  • Feature works on one monitor but not another

Common Causes

  • Snap Assist feature disabled in Settings
  • Windows 11 Snap settings partially configured
  • Third-party window manager overriding snap behavior
  • Multiple monitors with different DPI causing rendering issues
  • High contrast or accessibility mode interfering
  • Registry setting disabling Snap Assist suggestions

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Snap Assist in Settings

  1. 1Windows 11:
  2. 2Settings → System → Multitasking
  3. 3Toggle ON "Snap windows"
  4. 4Click the arrow to expand options:
  5. 5Check: "When I snap a window, suggest what I can snap next to it"
  6. 6Check: "Show snap layouts when I hover over maximize button"
  7. 7Check: "Show snap layouts when I drag a window to top of screen"
  8. 8Windows 10:
  9. 9Settings → System → Multitasking
  10. 10Toggle ON "Snap windows"
  11. 11Check: "When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it"
  12. 12Check: "When I resize a snapped window, simultaneously resize adjacent"
  13. 13After enabling: test by dragging a window to the left edge
  14. 14Remaining windows should appear as suggestions on the right

Solution 2: Fix Registry and Third-Party Conflicts

  1. 1Check registry for snap settings:
  2. 2HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
  3. 3SnapAssist DWORD should be 1 (enabled)
  4. 4If missing: create DWORD "SnapAssist" = 1
  5. 5Also check:
  6. 6EnableSnapAssistFlyout DWORD = 1
  7. 7EnableSnapBar DWORD = 1
  8. 8SnapFill DWORD = 1
  9. 9Restart explorer.exe after changes:
  10. 10Task Manager → find Windows Explorer → Restart
  11. 11Third-party conflicts:
  12. 12Disable window management tools temporarily:
  13. 13FancyZones (PowerToys) — can override snap behavior
  14. 14DisplayFusion, AquaSnap, Divvy, etc.
  15. 15Test Snap Assist with these disabled
  16. 16If it works: reconfigure the third-party tool to not conflict

Solution 3: Fix Multi-Monitor and Display Issues

  1. 1Snap Assist can misbehave with multiple monitors:
  2. 2Ensure all monitors use same DPI scaling:
  3. 3Settings → System → Display
  4. 4Select each monitor → set same Scale percentage
  5. 5Different scales can cause Snap Assist to render off-screen
  6. 6Check display arrangement:
  7. 7Settings → System → Display → rearrange monitors
  8. 8Ensure monitors are aligned (not offset)
  9. 9If using high contrast or accessibility mode:
  10. 10Try temporarily disabling high contrast
  11. 11Settings → Accessibility → Contrast themes → None
  12. 12Test Snap Assist
  13. 13For persistent issues:
  14. 14Reset multitasking to defaults:
  15. 15Settings → System → Multitasking
  16. 16Turn OFF "Snap windows" → restart PC → turn back ON
  17. 17This re-initializes all snap components
