How to Fix Touchpad Scroll Direction Reversed or Wrong on Windows

Touchpad scrolling in the wrong direction? Natural scrolling keeps changing? Two-finger scroll reversed after update? Touchpad scroll direction setting not saving? Scroll direction different from mouse wheel? Fix touchpad scroll direction issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Two-finger scroll moves content in wrong direction
  • Scroll direction changed after Windows Update
  • Touchpad scroll setting reverts after restart
  • Mouse scroll and touchpad scroll in different directions
  • No option to change scroll direction in Settings
  • Precision touchpad settings missing scroll direction toggle

Common Causes

  • Windows Update changed touchpad driver or settings
  • Touchpad driver not a Precision Touchpad driver
  • Registry setting for scroll direction corrupted
  • Third-party touchpad software overriding Windows settings
  • Multiple pointing device drivers conflicting
  • Synaptics/ELAN driver settings separate from Windows settings

Solutions

Solution 1: Change Scroll Direction in Settings

  1. 1For Precision Touchpads (most modern laptops):
  2. 2Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad
  3. 3Expand "Scroll & zoom"
  4. 4Under "Scrolling direction":
  5. 5Choose "Down motion scrolls down" (traditional)
  6. 6Or "Down motion scrolls up" (natural/Mac-style)
  7. 7If this section is missing:
  8. 8Your touchpad may not be a Precision Touchpad
  9. 9Check Device Manager → Human Interface Devices
  10. 10Look for "HID-compliant touch pad" (precision) vs vendor-specific
  11. 11For non-precision touchpads:
  12. 12Look in the manufacturer's touchpad software
  13. 13Synaptics: system tray icon → Settings → Scroll
  14. 14ELAN: Control Panel → ELAN → Multi-finger → Scrolling

Solution 2: Fix via Registry

  1. 1If Settings changes don't persist:
  2. 2Registry Editor (regedit):
  3. 3HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PrecisionTouchPad
  4. 4Find "ScrollDirection" DWORD:
  5. 50 = Down motion scrolls down (traditional)
  6. 61 = Down motion scrolls up (natural)
  7. 7Change to your preference
  8. 8Also check per-device setting:
  9. 9HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PrecisionTouchPad\[DeviceID]
  10. 10Look for FlipDirection or ReverseScrollDirection values
  11. 11For Synaptics touchpads:
  12. 12HKLM\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\TouchPadPS2
  13. 13Look for "2FingerReverseScroll" or similar
  14. 14Restart PC after registry changes

Solution 3: Update or Reinstall Touchpad Driver

  1. 1Driver issues are the most common cause of scroll problems:
  2. 2Device Manager → Human Interface Devices
  3. 3Or: Device Manager → Mice and other pointing devices
  4. 4Right-click touchpad device → Update driver
  5. 5Choose "Search automatically"
  6. 6If already up to date — try rolling back:
  7. 7Right-click → Properties → Driver tab → Roll Back Driver
  8. 8If Roll Back is grayed out:
  9. 9Uninstall the touchpad driver:
  10. 10Right-click → Uninstall device → check "Delete driver"
  11. 11Restart PC — Windows will reinstall default driver
  12. 12For best results: download latest driver from laptop manufacturer
  13. 13Dell: dell.com/support
  14. 14Lenovo: support.lenovo.com
  15. 15HP: support.hp.com
  16. 16Check if manufacturer offers a Precision Touchpad driver
