Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Cursor invisible but mouse clicks still work
  • Cursor disappears after waking from sleep
  • Cursor vanishes in specific apps (games, browsers)
  • Touchpad cursor gone but external mouse works
  • Cursor flickers or appears/disappears rapidly

Common Causes

  • Display driver issue hiding hardware cursor
  • Mouse cursor scheme corrupted or set to invisible
  • Touchpad driver disabled cursor
  • App or game captured cursor and didn't release it
  • Hardware acceleration conflict in apps
  • Multiple monitors with cursor stuck on disconnected display

Solutions

Solution 1: Quick Fixes

  1. 1Press Ctrl+Alt+Del → this often forces cursor to reappear
  2. 2Try pressing the touchpad toggle key (often F5, F7, or F9 with Fn)
  3. 3Press Windows key → type "mouse" → navigate with arrow keys to Mouse settings
  4. 4Under "Mouse properties" → Pointer Options:
  5. 5CHECK "Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key"
  6. 6UNCHECK "Hide pointer while typing"
  7. 7This helps locate and keep the cursor visible

Solution 2: Fix Cursor Scheme and Display

  1. 1Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → "Additional mouse settings"
  2. 2Pointers tab → select "Windows Default" scheme → Apply
  3. 3If cursor is stuck on another monitor:
  4. 4Win+P → select "PC screen only" to disable extra displays
  5. 5Cursor should jump back to main screen
  6. 6For high-DPI displays: cursor may be rendering too small
  7. 7Settings → Accessibility → Mouse pointer → increase "Size" slider
  8. 8Also try changing pointer color to improve visibility

Solution 3: Fix Display and Touchpad Drivers

  1. 1Update display driver: Device Manager → Display adapters → Update driver
  2. 2Or download latest from NVIDIA/AMD/Intel website
  3. 3For touchpad: Device Manager → "Mice and other pointing devices"
  4. 4Find touchpad → right-click → Enable device (if disabled)
  5. 5If not listed: check "Human Interface Devices" for touchpad entry
  6. 6Uninstall touchpad driver → restart → let Windows reinstall
  7. 7For persistent issues: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad
  8. 8Ensure touchpad is ON and "Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected" is checked
