Solutions
Solution 1: Enable System Protection Manually
- 1Right-click This PC → Properties → System Protection (or search "Create a restore point")
- 2Select your C: drive in the list
- 3Click "Configure..."
- 4Select "Turn on system protection"
- 5Move the "Max Usage" slider to at least 5-10%
- 6Click Apply → OK
- 7Back on the main dialog: click "Create..." to make a test restore point
- 8Name it "Test Restore Point" and click Create
- 9If it succeeds: System Protection is now working
Solution 2: Fix via Group Policy and Registry
- 1If the Configure button is greyed out: Group Policy may be blocking it
- 2Open gpedit.msc (Windows Pro/Enterprise only)
- 3Navigate to: Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → System Restore
- 4Set "Turn off System Restore" to "Not Configured"
- 5Set "Turn off Configuration" to "Not Configured"
- 6Run: gpupdate /force
- 7If on Windows Home: open regedit as Admin
- 8Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
- 9Delete "DisableSR" and "DisableConfig" values if they exist
- 10Restart the computer and try enabling System Protection again
Solution 3: Fix Volume Shadow Copy Service
- 1System Protection depends on Volume Shadow Copy (VSS)
- 2Press Win+R → type: services.msc → Enter
- 3Find "Volume Shadow Copy" service
- 4Double-click → set Startup type to "Manual"
- 5Click Start if the service is stopped
- 6Also check: "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" — set to Manual
- 7Open CMD as Admin: vssadmin list writers
- 8If you see errors: run: vssadmin delete shadows /all
- 9Then restart and try creating a restore point
