How to Fix Fix System Protection Disabled on Windows on Windows

System Restore disabled or greyed out? System Protection turned off for C: drive? Can't create restore points? Fix System Protection and restore point issues on Windows.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • System Protection shows "Off" for C: drive
  • Can't create manual restore points — button is greyed out
  • System Restore says "System Protection is turned off"
  • "Turn on system protection" button is greyed out
  • No restore points available despite Protection being on
  • System Restore was disabled by Group Policy or administrator

Common Causes

  • System Protection disabled by Group Policy or registry setting
  • Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) service not running
  • Disk space too low for restore point storage
  • System Protection allocation set to 0%
  • Third-party cleanup tool deleted restore points and disabled protection
  • Windows was reset or upgraded and System Protection wasn't re-enabled

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable System Protection Manually

  1. 1Right-click This PC → Properties → System Protection (or search "Create a restore point")
  2. 2Select your C: drive in the list
  3. 3Click "Configure..."
  4. 4Select "Turn on system protection"
  5. 5Move the "Max Usage" slider to at least 5-10%
  6. 6Click Apply → OK
  7. 7Back on the main dialog: click "Create..." to make a test restore point
  8. 8Name it "Test Restore Point" and click Create
  9. 9If it succeeds: System Protection is now working

Solution 2: Fix via Group Policy and Registry

  1. 1If the Configure button is greyed out: Group Policy may be blocking it
  2. 2Open gpedit.msc (Windows Pro/Enterprise only)
  3. 3Navigate to: Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → System Restore
  4. 4Set "Turn off System Restore" to "Not Configured"
  5. 5Set "Turn off Configuration" to "Not Configured"
  6. 6Run: gpupdate /force
  7. 7If on Windows Home: open regedit as Admin
  8. 8Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
  9. 9Delete "DisableSR" and "DisableConfig" values if they exist
  10. 10Restart the computer and try enabling System Protection again

Solution 3: Fix Volume Shadow Copy Service

  1. 1System Protection depends on Volume Shadow Copy (VSS)
  2. 2Press Win+R → type: services.msc → Enter
  3. 3Find "Volume Shadow Copy" service
  4. 4Double-click → set Startup type to "Manual"
  5. 5Click Start if the service is stopped
  6. 6Also check: "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" — set to Manual
  7. 7Open CMD as Admin: vssadmin list writers
  8. 8If you see errors: run: vssadmin delete shadows /all
  9. 9Then restart and try creating a restore point
