How to Fix System Image Backup Failed or Incomplete on Windows

Windows system image backup failing with errors, running out of space, or taking extremely long? Fix backup image creation on Windows 10 and 11.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix 100% Disk Usage

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "The backup failed" error with no clear explanation
  • Backup fails with "not enough disk space" even though drive is large
  • System image backup stuck at a percentage for hours
  • "The backup location does not have enough free space" error
  • "The parameter is incorrect" error (0x80070057)
  • Backup image incomplete — can't restore from it
  • Backup to network location fails with access denied

Common Causes

  • Destination drive formatted as FAT32 (max file size 4GB, images are larger)
  • Destination drive has insufficient free space for the image
  • Shadow copy (VSS) service not running properly
  • EFI System Partition too small (under 100MB causes errors)
  • Corrupted previous backup preventing new backup creation
  • Third-party backup or antivirus software conflicting with VSS
  • Network location permissions not allowing write access

Solutions

Solution 1: Check Destination Drive Requirements

  1. 1The backup drive must be formatted as NTFS (not FAT32 or exFAT)
  2. 2Check: right-click the drive → Properties → File system
  3. 3If FAT32: back up any files, then format as NTFS
  4. 4The drive needs free space roughly equal to your used system drive space
  5. 5Example: if C: has 120GB used, you need at least 120GB+ free on the backup drive
  6. 6External USB drives work well — use USB 3.0 for faster backups
  7. 7Delete old system images on the backup drive if space is tight

Solution 2: Fix VSS (Volume Shadow Copy) Service

  1. 1System image backup relies on VSS:
  2. 2Open Services (services.msc)
  3. 3Find "Volume Shadow Copy" → set to Manual → click Start
  4. 4Also check: "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" → Manual → Start
  5. 5If VSS fails: open CMD as Admin → vssadmin list writers
  6. 6Look for writers in "Failed" or "Waiting for completion" state
  7. 7Restart the computer and try the backup immediately after boot (before other apps load)

Solution 3: Fix Error 0x80070057

  1. 1This is one of the most common system image backup errors:
  2. 2Open Registry Editor → navigate to:
  3. 3HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Client
  4. 4If "DisableSystemBackupUI" exists and is set to 1: change to 0
  5. 5Also check: Control Panel → Region → Additional settings
  6. 6Make sure the "Decimal symbol" is a period (.) not a comma (,)
  7. 7This regional setting can actually cause backup failures on some systems

Solution 4: Use Alternative Backup Tools

  1. 1Windows built-in system image backup has known limitations:
  2. 2Consider free alternatives that are more reliable:
  3. 3Macrium Reflect Free: full system image, incremental backups, reliable restore
  4. 4Veeam Agent for Windows (free): enterprise-grade backup for personal use
  5. 5Both support: system image, file-level backup, schedule, USB/network destinations
  6. 6They also create bootable recovery media more reliably
  7. 7For cloud backup: consider Backblaze ($7/month, unlimited) for offsite protection
