How to Fix Spatial Audio Not Working — Windows Sonic / Dolby Atmos Broken on Windows

Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, or DTS:X spatial audio not working, cutting out, or sounding wrong? Fix spatial sound on Windows 10 and 11.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix No Audio or Sound

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Windows Sonic enabled but audio sounds flat/normal (no spatial effect)
  • Dolby Atmos for Headphones not activating — sounds like regular stereo
  • Spatial audio option greyed out in sound settings
  • Audio cuts out or stutters when spatial sound is enabled
  • "Spatial sound" dropdown shows "Off" and can't be changed
  • Surround sound working in some apps but not others
  • Spatial audio causes audio delay or desync with video

Common Causes

  • Audio driver not supporting spatial audio format
  • Wrong audio endpoint format (needs stereo, not surround)
  • Dolby Access or DTS Sound Unbound app not installed/licensed
  • Audio enhancements conflicting with spatial processing
  • Bluetooth headphones not supporting the required codec
  • Game or app overriding system spatial audio settings
  • Sample rate mismatch between app and audio device

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Spatial Audio

  1. 1Right-click the speaker icon in taskbar → Sound settings
  2. 2Click on your audio output device → Properties
  3. 3Scroll down to "Spatial audio" section
  4. 4Select: Windows Sonic for Headphones (free, built-in)
  5. 5Or: Dolby Atmos for Headphones (paid, requires Dolby Access app)
  6. 6Or: DTS Sound Unbound (paid, requires DTS app)
  7. 7Test with a spatial audio demo: search "Dolby Atmos demo" on YouTube

Solution 2: Fix Greyed-Out Spatial Audio

  1. 1If the spatial audio dropdown is greyed out:
  2. 2Check audio device format: Sound settings → device properties → Advanced
  3. 3Set format to: 24-bit, 48000 Hz (Studio Quality) — spatial audio requires this
  4. 4Disable "Audio enhancements" — they can conflict with spatial processing
  5. 5Update your audio driver: Device Manager → Sound controllers → Update driver
  6. 6Some USB audio devices don't support spatial audio
  7. 7Bluetooth: only stereo mode (A2DP) supports spatial — Hands-Free mode does not

Solution 3: Fix Spatial Audio Quality Issues

  1. 1If spatial audio sounds wrong or causes stuttering:
  2. 2Make sure you're using headphones — spatial audio sounds weird on speakers
  3. 3Disable ALL other audio enhancements first:
  4. 4Sound settings → device properties → Advanced → uncheck "Enable audio enhancements"
  5. 5Also disable any manufacturer audio software (Realtek, Nahimic, Sonic Studio)
  6. 6These programs apply their own spatial effects that conflict with Windows Sonic
  7. 7If audio desyncs with video: try a lower sample rate (44100 Hz)

Solution 4: Set Up Dolby Atmos

  1. 1For Dolby Atmos specifically:
  2. 2Install "Dolby Access" from Microsoft Store
  3. 3Open it → choose "Dolby Atmos for Headphones" → purchase or start free trial
  4. 4After activation: spatial audio dropdown will show "Dolby Atmos for Headphones"
  5. 5For Dolby Atmos on home theater (speakers/soundbar):
  6. 6Your receiver/soundbar must support Dolby Atmos
  7. 7Set Windows output to the Atmos-capable device
  8. 8In the Dolby Access app: select "Dolby Atmos for home theater"
