How to Fix Microsoft Store Not Working

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Win + Shift + S shortcut does nothing
  • Snipping Tool opens but freezes when trying to capture
  • Print Screen key not capturing anything
  • Screenshots save but clipboard is empty
  • "Snipping Tool isn't working right now" error
  • Snipping Tool captures but saves as blank/black image

Common Causes

  • Snipping Tool app needs repair or update
  • Focus Assist / Do Not Disturb blocking the overlay
  • Another screenshot tool conflicting (ShareX, Greenshot, etc.)
  • Clipboard history disabled
  • Keyboard shortcut reassigned by another application
  • GPU driver issue causing blank captures

Solutions

Solution 1: Fix Snipping Tool App

  1. 1Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Snipping Tool
  2. 2Click Advanced options > Repair
  3. 3If Repair doesn't work: click Reset
  4. 4If still broken: open Microsoft Store > search "Snipping Tool" > Update
  5. 5Try Win + Shift + S again
  6. 6Alternative shortcut: just press Print Screen (may need to enable in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard)

Solution 2: Fix Print Screen Key

  1. 1Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
  2. 2Enable "Use the Print Screen key to open screen capture"
  3. 3This maps Print Screen to the Snipping Tool overlay
  4. 4If using a laptop: try Fn + Print Screen
  5. 5Some keyboards have a dedicated Screenshot key instead
  6. 6Test: press the key — the screen should dim with a capture overlay

Solution 3: Fix Blank or Black Screenshots

  1. 1If captures appear blank or black:
  2. 2This is usually a GPU/display driver issue
  3. 3Update your display driver: Device Manager > Display adapters > Update driver
  4. 4Try disabling hardware acceleration in the app you are capturing
  5. 5For game captures: use Win + G (Xbox Game Bar) instead of Snipping Tool
  6. 6If capturing a video player: some players use overlay rendering that blocks screenshots
