Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Microsoft Store Not Working

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Press Win+Shift+S but screenshot doesn't appear anywhere
  • Snip notification appears briefly then vanishes — can't click it
  • Snipping Tool opens but captured image is blank or black
  • Screenshots save but to an unknown location
  • Snipping Tool crashes when trying to save
  • "Snip saved to clipboard" but paste shows nothing
  • Print Screen key doesn't capture anything

Common Causes

  • Focus Assist or Do Not Disturb hiding the snip notification
  • Snipping Tool app corrupted or not properly registered
  • OneDrive screenshot auto-save interfering with snip location
  • Clipboard not properly receiving the screenshot data
  • Outdated version of Snipping Tool after Windows Update
  • Screenshot folder permissions preventing save
  • GPU driver issue causing blank/black screen captures

Solutions

Solution 1: Disable Focus Assist for Snipping Notifications

  1. 1Focus Assist can hide the snip notification:
  2. 2Settings → System → Focus (or Focus Assist)
  3. 3Set to "Off" or "Priority only"
  4. 4If using "Priority only": add Snipping Tool to the priority list
  5. 5After capturing with Win+Shift+S: the notification should now appear
  6. 6Click the notification to open the snip in the editor and save it

Solution 2: Repair or Reset Snipping Tool

  1. 1Settings → Apps → Installed apps
  2. 2Search for "Snipping Tool" → click three dots → Advanced options
  3. 3Click "Repair" first — this fixes the app without losing settings
  4. 4If Repair doesn't work: click "Reset" — this clears all app data
  5. 5If still broken: uninstall and reinstall from Microsoft Store
  6. 6Search "Snipping Tool" in Microsoft Store → Install

Solution 3: Configure Screenshot Save Location

  1. 1By default, Win+Shift+S copies to clipboard (not saved to file)
  2. 2To auto-save screenshots to a folder:
  3. 3Open Snipping Tool → three dots → Settings
  4. 4Enable "Automatically save screenshots"
  5. 5Set your preferred save location
  6. 6Alternative: use Win+Print Screen — this auto-saves to Pictures\Screenshots
  7. 7OneDrive users: check OneDrive settings → Backup → Screenshots (may redirect saves)

Solution 4: Fix Black or Blank Screenshots

  1. 1Black screenshots are usually caused by GPU/driver issues:
  2. 2Update your GPU driver (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel)
  3. 3Disable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling:
  4. 4Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings → toggle off
  5. 5Try using Print Screen instead of Win+Shift+S
  6. 6For specific apps showing black: the app may block screen capture (DRM)
  7. 7Games and streaming apps often block screenshot tools intentionally
