How to Fix Copy and Paste Not Working on Windows

Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V not working, clipboard not holding data, or paste inserting old content? Fix copy-paste and clipboard functionality issues in Windows.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Ctrl+C copies but Ctrl+V pastes nothing
  • Right-click > Paste is grayed out
  • Clipboard loses content within seconds
  • Copy-paste works in some apps but not others
  • Copy-paste stopped working after update
  • Clipboard history (Win+V) empty despite copying

Common Causes

  • Clipboard service crashed or not running
  • Third-party clipboard manager conflicting
  • Remote Desktop clipboard not syncing
  • Application locked the clipboard
  • Corrupted user profile clipboard settings
  • Skype, Teams, or other apps taking clipboard ownership

Solutions

Solution 1: Restart Clipboard Service

  1. 1Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
  2. 2Go to Details tab > find "rdpclip.exe" > End task (if running)
  3. 3Open Command Prompt: run "rdpclip.exe" to restart it
  4. 4If not using Remote Desktop: press Windows + R, type services.msc
  5. 5Find "Clipboard User Service" > right-click > Restart
  6. 6Test copy-paste after restarting the service

Solution 2: Clear Clipboard Data

  1. 1Go to Settings > System > Clipboard
  2. 2Click "Clear" under "Clear clipboard data"
  3. 3Turn OFF then ON "Clipboard history"
  4. 4Or open Command Prompt and run: echo off | clip
  5. 5This clears the clipboard buffer completely
  6. 6Try copying and pasting again

Solution 3: Fix Application-Specific Issues

  1. 1If copy-paste fails only in specific apps: the app may be locking the clipboard
  2. 2Close apps one by one to find which one is interfering
  3. 3Common culprits: Skype, download managers, clipboard utilities
  4. 4For Remote Desktop: ensure "Clipboard" is checked in the RDP connection settings
  5. 5Local Resources tab > check "Clipboard"
  6. 6If nothing works: create a new user profile to test — may be profile corruption
