How to Fix Windows Update Errors

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Windows Sandbox option missing from Start menu
  • "Windows Sandbox failed to start" error
  • Sandbox grayed out in Windows Features
  • "Hypervisor is not present" error
  • Sandbox starts but immediately closes
  • Sandbox extremely slow or unresponsive

Common Causes

  • Virtualization (VT-x/AMD-V) not enabled in BIOS
  • Hyper-V feature not installed
  • Windows edition doesn't support Sandbox (Home edition)
  • Antivirus blocking virtualization
  • Conflicting virtualization software (VirtualBox, VMware)
  • Insufficient RAM (4GB minimum required)

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Virtualization in BIOS

  1. 1Restart and enter BIOS (F2, F12, Del, or Esc — depends on manufacturer)
  2. 2Find "Virtualization Technology", "VT-x", "AMD-V", or "SVM Mode"
  3. 3Enable it
  4. 4Save and exit BIOS
  5. 5Boot into Windows and check Task Manager > Performance > CPU
  6. 6Verify "Virtualization: Enabled" appears

Solution 2: Install Windows Sandbox Feature

  1. 1Go to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off
  2. 2Check "Windows Sandbox"
  3. 3Also ensure "Hyper-V" and "Virtual Machine Platform" are checked
  4. 4Click OK and wait for installation
  5. 5Restart your computer
  6. 6Search for "Windows Sandbox" in Start menu

Solution 3: Fix Conflicting Virtualization Software

  1. 1If you use VirtualBox or VMware, they may conflict with Hyper-V
  2. 2Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  3. 3To enable Hyper-V: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto
  4. 4To disable Hyper-V (for VirtualBox): bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off
  5. 5Restart after each change
  6. 6You may need to toggle between them depending on what you're using
