How to Fix Hyper-V Not Working or Missing on Windows

Hyper-V not available, virtual machines failing to start, or Hyper-V Manager showing errors? Fix Hyper-V installation, BIOS virtualization, and VM startup failures on Windows 10/11 Pro.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Hyper-V option missing in Windows Features
  • Virtual machine won't start with "Hypervisor is not running" error
  • Hyper-V Manager crashes or shows blank
  • VMs extremely slow or freeze during boot
  • "This computer doesn't support Hyper-V" message
  • Hyper-V conflicts with VirtualBox or VMware

Common Causes

  • Virtualization (VT-x/AMD-V) disabled in BIOS/UEFI
  • Hyper-V Windows feature not installed
  • Running Windows Home edition (Hyper-V requires Pro/Enterprise/Education)
  • Another hypervisor (VirtualBox, VMware) conflicting
  • Hyper-V services not running
  • Incompatible CPU (rare — most CPUs since 2010 support it)

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Virtualization in BIOS

  1. 1Restart your PC and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually F2, F10, DEL, or ESC during boot)
  2. 2Look for: Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) or AMD-V / SVM Mode
  3. 3Enable it and save changes (F10)
  4. 4Boot into Windows and verify: open Task Manager > Performance > CPU
  5. 5Look for "Virtualization: Enabled" at the bottom
  6. 6If virtualization shows Disabled even after BIOS change: check for Secure Boot conflicts

Solution 2: Install Hyper-V Feature

  1. 1Open Settings > Apps > Optional features > More Windows features
  2. 2Or: open Admin CMD and run: dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Hyper-V-All
  3. 3Check the box for "Hyper-V" (includes Management Tools and Platform)
  4. 4Click OK and restart when prompted
  5. 5After restart: search "Hyper-V Manager" in Start menu
  6. 6Note: requires Windows 10/11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education edition

Solution 3: Fix Hyper-V and VirtualBox Conflict

  1. 1Hyper-V and older VirtualBox/VMware versions cannot run simultaneously
  2. 2To use VirtualBox: disable Hyper-V temporarily:
  3. 3Admin CMD: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off then restart
  4. 4To re-enable Hyper-V: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto then restart
  5. 5VirtualBox 6.0+ and VMware 15.5+ can coexist with Hyper-V using their compatibility modes
  6. 6Update VirtualBox/VMware to the latest version for best compatibility
