Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Computer starts reading everything on screen aloud
  • Narrator activates on every boot
  • Can't figure out how to turn off Narrator
  • Narrator shortcut key being triggered accidentally

Common Causes

  • Narrator enabled in Accessibility settings

Solutions

Solution 1: Immediately Turn Off Narrator

  1. 1Press Win+Ctrl+Enter — this toggles Narrator off
  2. 2Or press Caps Lock+Esc (Narrator stop shortcut)
  3. 3Or go to Settings > Accessibility > Narrator
  4. 4Turn OFF "Narrator" toggle at the top
  5. 5If you can't navigate: press Win key, type "Narrator", press Enter, then turn off the toggle
  6. 6The voice should stop immediately

Solution 2: Prevent Narrator from Auto-Starting

  1. 1Go to Settings > Accessibility > Narrator
  2. 2Turn OFF "Narrator" toggle
  3. 3Uncheck "Start Narrator after sign-in"
  4. 4Uncheck "Start Narrator before sign-in for everyone"
  5. 5Under "Keyboard shortcut": uncheck "Allow the shortcut key to start Narrator"
  6. 6This prevents accidental activation via Win+Ctrl+Enter

Solution 3: Fix Narrator on Lock Screen

  1. 1Narrator can be toggled from the lock screen Accessibility button
  2. 2If someone accidentally enabled it there: click the Accessibility icon on lock screen
  3. 3Uncheck Narrator
  4. 4To prevent this: Settings > Accessibility > Narrator
  5. 5Disable "Start Narrator before sign-in for everyone"
  6. 6For managed PCs: Group Policy can disable Ease of Access on lock screen
