Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix No Audio or Sound

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Apps show "Microphone access is denied" or "No microphone detected"
  • Zoom, Teams, or Discord can't access the microphone
  • Microphone works in some apps but not others
  • Windows privacy settings show microphone access as "Off"
  • Microphone privacy toggle is greyed out and can't be changed
  • Recording apps show flat line — no audio input detected

Common Causes

  • Windows microphone privacy settings blocking access for apps
  • App-specific microphone permission not granted
  • Group Policy restricting microphone access on managed PCs
  • Antivirus or security software blocking microphone access
  • Microphone disabled in Sound settings (not privacy)
  • Wrong microphone selected as default recording device

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Microphone Privacy Access

  1. 1Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone (Win 11)
  2. 2Or Settings → Privacy → Microphone (Win 10)
  3. 3Ensure "Microphone access" is turned ON at the top
  4. 4Ensure "Let apps access your microphone" is ON
  5. 5Scroll down to see individual app permissions
  6. 6Toggle ON for the specific app that needs microphone access
  7. 7For desktop apps (not Store apps): ensure "Let desktop apps access your microphone" is ON at the bottom
  8. 8This setting controls access for Chrome, Firefox, Zoom, Discord, etc.

Solution 2: Set Correct Default Microphone

  1. 1Right-click the speaker icon in system tray → Sound settings
  2. 2Under Input: select the correct microphone from the dropdown
  3. 3Click on the microphone → ensure it's not muted and volume is up
  4. 4Click "Test your microphone" to verify it picks up sound
  5. 5For older Sound settings: right-click speaker icon → Sounds → Recording tab
  6. 6Right-click your microphone → Set as Default Device
  7. 7Also Set as Default Communication Device
  8. 8If microphone shows "Disabled": right-click → Enable

Solution 3: Fix Greyed Out or Blocked Settings

  1. 1If the microphone toggle is greyed out:
  2. 2Open Group Policy: gpedit.msc → Computer Config → Admin Templates
  3. 3App Privacy → "Let Windows apps access the microphone"
  4. 4Set to "Not Configured" or "Enabled" with "User is in control"
  5. 5If gpedit is unavailable, use Registry:
  6. 6HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone
  7. 7Set "Value" to "Allow"
  8. 8Check antivirus: some security suites block microphone (webcam protection features)
  9. 9Temporarily disable antivirus to test, then add exceptions
