Symptoms
You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:
- •Microphone volume at 100% but others say you're very quiet
- •Mic level meter in Settings barely moves when speaking
- •Recording apps capture very quiet audio
- •Microphone volume drops to low level on its own during calls
- •Mic works at normal volume on other devices but quiet on this PC
- •Headset mic quiet but built-in laptop mic works fine (or vice versa)
- •Boosting mic in apps doesn't help enough
Common Causes
- ⚠Microphone boost not enabled in Windows audio settings
- ⚠Applications using "Automatic Gain Control" that reduces volume
- ⚠Wrong microphone selected as default recording device
- ⚠Audio driver not providing full gain control
- ⚠Communication activity auto-ducking reducing mic volume
- ⚠Physical mic mute switch on headset or laptop activated
- ⚠Mic positioned too far from mouth (headset arm not extended)
Solutions
Solution 1: Enable Microphone Boost
- 1Right-click the speaker icon in taskbar → Sounds (or "Sound settings")
- 2Go to Recording tab → double-click your microphone
- 3Levels tab: set Microphone slider to 100%
- 4If "Microphone Boost" slider exists: set it to +10dB or +20dB
- 5Click Apply → OK
- 6Test by speaking and watching the level meter in the Recording tab
- 7Warning: too much boost (+30dB) will add background noise/hiss
Solution 2: Disable Automatic Gain Control
- 1Many communication apps automatically adjust mic volume:
- 2Zoom: Settings → Audio → uncheck "Automatically adjust microphone volume"
- 3Discord: Settings → Voice & Video → disable "Automatically determine input sensitivity"
- 4Teams: Settings → Devices → disable auto-adjust if available
- 5Skype: Settings → Audio & Video → disable "Automatically adjust microphone settings"
- 6Also in Windows: right-click speaker → Sounds → Communications tab
- 7Select "Do nothing" → Apply (this prevents Windows from ducking audio during calls)
Solution 3: Check Default Recording Device
- 1You might be using the wrong microphone:
- 2Right-click speaker icon → Sound settings → Input section
- 3Make sure the correct microphone is selected as default
- 4If you have multiple mics (laptop built-in + headset + webcam): select the right one
- 5Test each: Settings → System → Sound → Input → Test your microphone
- 6Speak at normal volume and check which device shows the most activity
- 7Set the loudest/best one as default
Solution 4: Update or Reinstall Audio Driver
- 1Some audio drivers don't expose the Microphone Boost option:
- 2Download the latest audio driver from your PC manufacturer
- 3Realtek audio: check for the latest Realtek Audio Console from Microsoft Store
- 4Uninstall current driver: Device Manager → Audio inputs → Uninstall → check "Delete driver"
- 5Restart → install the new driver
- 6After install: check if Microphone Boost slider now appears in Levels tab
- 7Realtek Audio Console may have additional mic gain settings not available in Windows settings
