How to Fix Fix Windows Input Indicator Missing from Taskbar on Windows

Windows input indicator (language bar or keyboard layout icon) missing from taskbar? Cannot switch input languages? Fix missing input indicator with these steps.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Language/keyboard icon missing from taskbar system tray
  • Cannot switch between keyboard layouts using taskbar
  • Win+Space shortcut does not show language switching options
  • Input indicator was present but disappeared after update
  • Only one keyboard layout visible despite having multiple installed
  • Touch keyboard icon also missing from taskbar

Common Causes

  • Input indicator disabled in taskbar settings
  • Only one keyboard language installed so indicator is hidden
  • System tray overflow hiding the input indicator
  • Windows Explorer process crash causing taskbar icons to disappear
  • Corrupted language settings in registry
  • CTF Loader service (ctfmon.exe) not running

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Input Indicator in Taskbar Settings

  1. 1Open Settings → Personalization → Taskbar
  2. 2Scroll down to "System tray icons" or "Other system tray icons"
  3. 3Toggle "Input indicator" to On
  4. 4Also check: Settings → Time & language → Typing → Advanced keyboard settings
  5. 5Ensure "Use the desktop language bar when it's available" is checked or unchecked as preferred
  6. 6Uncheck "Let me use a different input method for each app window" to simplify
  7. 7Check the taskbar system tray for the indicator

Solution 2: Add Multiple Keyboard Languages

  1. 1Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region
  2. 2Click "Add a language"
  3. 3Add at least one additional language (e.g., English UK if you have English US)
  4. 4The input indicator only appears when multiple input methods are installed
  5. 5After adding, verify the indicator appears in the taskbar
  6. 6Use Win+Space to test switching between languages
  7. 7If you don't need multiple languages, the indicator intentionally hides with only one

Solution 3: Restart CTF Loader and Explorer

  1. 1Open Task Manager: Ctrl+Shift+Esc
  2. 2Look for "CTF Loader" or "ctfmon.exe" in processes
  3. 3If not running, open Command Prompt and run: ctfmon.exe
  4. 4To make it start automatically:
  5. 5Open Task Scheduler → check for MsCtfMonitor task
  6. 6If disabled, right-click → Enable
  7. 7Also restart Windows Explorer: Task Manager → find Windows Explorer → Restart
  8. 8Check if the input indicator reappears
