Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Pressing Win+G does nothing — Game Bar doesn't appear
  • Game Bar opens briefly then immediately closes
  • Game Bar overlay shows but buttons are greyed out
  • Can't record gameplay — record button missing or disabled
  • Game Bar was working before but stopped after an update

  • Game Mode or Game Bar blocked by Group Policy
  • Conflicting overlay software (Discord, GeForce Experience, Steam)
  • Xbox Game Bar app needs to be repaired or reset
  • Keyboard shortcut (Win+G) reassigned or disabled

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Xbox Game Bar in Settings

  1. 1Open Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar
  2. 2Toggle "Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller" to ON
  3. 3Also toggle: "Allow your controller to open Xbox Game Bar" to ON
  4. 4Check the keyboard shortcut: Win+G should be listed
  5. 5If Game Bar is already enabled: toggle OFF → restart → toggle ON
  6. 6Also check: Settings → Gaming → Game Mode → turn ON
  7. 7Press Win+G to test if Game Bar now opens
  8. 8If it opens but overlay is broken: proceed to next solution

Solution 2: Repair or Reset Xbox Game Bar App

  1. 1Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps
  2. 2Search for "Xbox Game Bar"
  3. 3Click the three dots (⋯) → Advanced options
  4. 4First try: click "Repair"
  5. 5Test with Win+G
  6. 6If still broken: click "Reset" (this clears Game Bar settings)
  7. 7If Reset doesn't help: open PowerShell as Admin
  8. 8Run: Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay | Remove-AppxPackage
  9. 9Then reinstall from Microsoft Store: search "Xbox Game Bar" and install

Solution 3: Check Group Policy and Registry

  1. 1If Game Bar is blocked by policy (common in enterprise):
  2. 2Open gpedit.msc as Administrator
  3. 3Navigate to: Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting
  4. 4Set "Enables or disables Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting" to "Enabled"
  5. 5For registry: open regedit as Admin
  6. 6Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR
  7. 7Set "AppCaptureEnabled" to 1
  8. 8Also: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore → set "GameDVR_Enabled" to 1
  9. 9Restart the computer and press Win+G
