Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix No Internet Connection

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Application shows "No internet connection" but browser works fine
  • Game unable to connect to servers or play online
  • "Windows Defender Firewall has blocked some features of this app" notification
  • Program works on other computers but not this one
  • VPN or remote access tool unable to establish connection
  • Development server (localhost) not accessible from other devices on network
  • Application worked before but stopped after a Windows Update or security change

Common Causes

  • Windows Firewall blocking the application's outbound or inbound connections
  • User accidentally clicked "Cancel" or "Block" on the firewall prompt
  • Windows Update reset or modified firewall rules
  • Third-party security software adding extra firewall restrictions
  • Application uses non-standard ports that aren't allowed by default
  • Network profile changed from Private to Public (more restrictive rules)
  • Group Policy or enterprise firewall rules blocking the application

Solutions

Solution 1: Allow App Through Firewall (Settings)

  1. 1Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection
  2. 2Click "Allow an app through firewall"
  3. 3Click "Change settings" (requires admin)
  4. 4Click "Allow another app" → Browse → find the .exe of the blocked program
  5. 5Check both "Private" and "Public" checkboxes for it
  6. 6Click OK
  7. 7If the app is already listed: make sure both Private and Public are checked

Solution 2: Create Manual Firewall Rules

  1. 1For more control: open "Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security"
  2. 2Press Win+R → type wf.msc → Enter
  3. 3Click "Inbound Rules" → "New Rule" (on right panel)
  4. 4Select "Program" → browse to the .exe path
  5. 5Select "Allow the connection"
  6. 6Check all profiles: Domain, Private, Public
  7. 7Name the rule (e.g., "Allow MyGame")
  8. 8Repeat for "Outbound Rules" if the app also needs outbound exceptions

Solution 3: Reset Windows Firewall to Defaults

  1. 1If firewall rules are a mess and you want to start fresh:
  2. 2Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection
  3. 3Click "Restore firewalls to default" at the bottom
  4. 4This removes ALL custom rules (inbound and outbound)
  5. 5Windows will re-prompt you for each app that tries to connect
  6. 6After reset: make sure your network profile is correct:
  7. 7Settings → Network → Properties → set to Private (for home) or Public (for public WiFi)

Solution 4: Temporarily Disable Firewall for Testing

  1. 1To confirm the firewall is the cause:
  2. 2Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection
  3. 3Click your active network (Private or Public)
  4. 4Toggle "Microsoft Defender Firewall" OFF
  5. 5Test if the app works now
  6. 6IMPORTANT: Re-enable the firewall immediately after testing
  7. 7If the app works with firewall off: create a proper firewall rule (methods above)
  8. 8Never leave the firewall disabled permanently
