Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • File Explorer background stays white in dark mode
  • Dark mode applied to Start menu and Settings but not Explorer
  • Explorer title bar is dark but file list area is white
  • Dark mode flickers or reverts in Explorer
  • Context menu in Explorer shows wrong theme colors
  • Dark mode worked before but broke after update

Common Causes

  • Windows theme cache corrupted
  • Custom theme or high contrast interfering
  • Explorer using legacy rendering that ignores dark mode
  • Third-party customization tool overriding theme
  • Corrupted UxTheme system files
  • Incomplete Windows Update that changed theme engine

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset Dark Mode Settings

  1. 1Settings → Personalization → Colors
  2. 2Under "Choose your mode": switch to "Light"
  3. 3Wait 10 seconds → switch back to "Dark"
  4. 4If using "Custom": set both "Windows mode" and "App mode" to Dark
  5. 5Also: turn OFF then ON "Transparency effects"
  6. 6Close and reopen File Explorer to check
  7. 7If still broken: sign out and sign back in

Solution 2: Clear Theme Cache

  1. 1Close all Explorer windows
  2. 2Open CMD as Admin:
  3. 3taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
  4. 4Delete theme cache: del /f /q "%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\ThemeCache*"
  5. 5Also clear icon cache: del /f /q "%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*"
  6. 6start explorer.exe
  7. 7Dark mode should now apply correctly
  8. 8If not: restart PC for full cache rebuild

Solution 3: Fix System Theme Components

  1. 1Remove any third-party theme tools (UltraUXThemePatcher, etc.)
  2. 2These modify system files and can break native dark mode
  3. 3Check for High Contrast: Settings → Accessibility → Contrast themes
  4. 4Ensure set to "None" (not a high contrast theme)
  5. 5Repair system files: CMD as Admin:
  6. 6sfc /scannow
  7. 7DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  8. 8Create a new user account to test — if dark mode works there, profile is corrupt
