Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix No Internet Connection

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Ethernet adapter shows "Unidentified network" in Network settings
  • Connected via cable but "No internet access"
  • Network icon shows exclamation mark despite cable connection
  • IP address shows 169.254.x.x (APIPA — no DHCP)
  • Other devices on same network work fine
  • Problem started after driver update or Windows Update

Common Causes

  • DHCP not assigning IP address to this adapter
  • Ethernet driver corrupted or incompatible
  • Static IP configuration incorrect or conflicting
  • Network profile stuck on "Public" blocking discovery
  • TCP/IP stack corrupted
  • Router not recognizing or allowing this MAC address

Solutions

Solution 1: Reset Network Configuration

  1. 1CMD as Admin:
  2. 2ipconfig /release
  3. 3ipconfig /flushdns
  4. 4ipconfig /renew
  5. 5If renew fails (still 169.254.x.x): DHCP isn't reaching your PC
  6. 6Check: ipconfig /all — verify DHCP Enabled shows "Yes"
  7. 7If No: set to DHCP — Network adapter → Properties → IPv4 → Obtain automatically
  8. 8Try a different Ethernet cable and port on router

Solution 2: Reset TCP/IP Stack

  1. 1CMD as Admin:
  2. 2netsh winsock reset
  3. 3netsh int ip reset
  4. 4netsh int ipv4 reset
  5. 5netsh int ipv6 reset
  6. 6Restart PC after all commands
  7. 7If still unidentified: disable and re-enable the adapter:
  8. 8Network Connections → right-click Ethernet → Disable → wait 10 seconds → Enable

Solution 3: Fix Driver and Hardware

  1. 1Device Manager → Network adapters → Ethernet adapter
  2. 2Right-click → Uninstall device → check "Delete driver software" → Uninstall
  3. 3Restart PC — Windows will reinstall the driver
  4. 4If problem started after update: roll back driver
  5. 5Properties → Driver → "Roll Back Driver"
  6. 6Check router: try connecting to a different LAN port
  7. 7Try connecting directly to modem (bypass router) to test
  8. 8If MAC filtering is on in router: add your PC's MAC address
