BitLocker not available, device encryption stuck, or recovery key issues? Fix encryption problems on Windows 10 and 11.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Windows Boot Loop

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Device encryption toggle greyed out in Settings
  • "BitLocker could not be enabled" error
  • BitLocker asking for recovery key at every boot
  • Encryption stuck at a percentage and not progressing
  • Can't find BitLocker recovery key
  • BitLocker enabled but drive shows as unencrypted

Common Causes

  • TPM not enabled in BIOS/UEFI
  • Device doesn't meet encryption requirements (TPM 2.0, UEFI, Secure Boot)
  • BIOS update changed TPM configuration
  • Recovery key not backed up before hardware change
  • Group Policy restricting BitLocker configuration
  • Drive has errors preventing encryption

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable TPM for BitLocker

  1. 1BitLocker requires TPM 2.0:
  2. 2Check TPM: Win+R → tpm.msc → should show "TPM is ready for use"
  3. 3If TPM not found: enable in BIOS/UEFI:
  4. 4Intel: enable "Intel PTT" (Platform Trust Technology)
  5. 5AMD: enable "AMD fTPM" (firmware TPM)
  6. 6After enabling: restart → BitLocker should become available

Solution 2: Find Recovery Key

  1. 1If BitLocker asks for recovery key:
  2. 2Microsoft account: go to account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey
  3. 3Azure AD: sign in at aka.ms/aadrecoverykey
  4. 4Printed copy: check where you stored it during setup
  5. 5USB drive: check USB drives for BitLocker Recovery Key file
  6. 6IT admin: if work device, contact IT for the key
  7. 7Without the key: the drive CANNOT be decrypted — data is lost

Solution 3: Fix Encryption Issues

  1. 1If encryption is stuck:
  2. 2CMD as Administrator: manage-bde -status C:
  3. 3Check encryption percentage and status
  4. 4If stuck: manage-bde -pause C: → wait → manage-bde -resume C:
  5. 5If errors: run chkdsk C: /f first, then retry encryption
  6. 6Encryption can take hours on large drives — let it complete
  7. 7Don't shut down during encryption — use sleep instead
