Solutions

Solution 1: Find Your Recovery Key Online

  1. 1Go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey on another device
  2. 2Sign in with your Microsoft account
  3. 3Your BitLocker recovery keys are stored there if backed up
  4. 4Look for the Key ID that matches what's shown on the recovery screen
  5. 5Enter the 48-digit recovery key
  6. 6This works if BitLocker backed up to your Microsoft account (most common)

Solution 2: Other Places to Find the Key

  1. 1Check your Microsoft account: account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey
  2. 2Check Azure AD: if a work/school account was used
  3. 3Check a USB drive: if you saved the key to a flash drive
  4. 4Check a printout: if you printed it during BitLocker setup
  5. 5Check your organization's IT department: if a managed device
  6. 6If nowhere found: the drive cannot be unlocked without the key

Solution 3: Prevent Future Lockouts

  1. 1After unlocking: go to Control Panel > BitLocker Drive Encryption
  2. 2Click "Back up your recovery key" and save to Microsoft account
  3. 3Also save to a USB drive as backup
  4. 4Before BIOS updates: suspend BitLocker first
  5. 5Run: manage-bde -protectors -disable C: (suspends for one reboot)
  6. 6BitLocker will automatically re-enable after the update reboot
