Laptop keyboard not typing, some keys not responding, or entire keyboard dead? Fix built-in laptop keyboard issues separate from external keyboard problems.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Driver Issues

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Laptop keyboard completely unresponsive
  • Some keys work but others don't
  • Keyboard types wrong characters
  • Keyboard works in BIOS but not in Windows
  • Keyboard stopped working after liquid spill
  • External USB keyboard works but built-in doesn't

Common Causes

  • Keyboard driver corrupted or disabled
  • Filter Keys or Sticky Keys accidentally enabled
  • Keyboard ribbon cable loose (hardware)
  • Liquid damage to keyboard membrane
  • BIOS keyboard settings changed
  • Windows Update broke the keyboard driver

Solutions

Solution 1: Reinstall Keyboard Driver

  1. 1Connect an external USB keyboard temporarily
  2. 2Open Device Manager
  3. 3Expand "Keyboards"
  4. 4Right-click "Standard PS/2 Keyboard" (or similar) > Uninstall device
  5. 5Check "Delete the driver software" if available
  6. 6Restart — Windows will reinstall the keyboard driver

Solution 2: Disable Filter Keys

  1. 1Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
  2. 2Turn OFF "Filter keys"
  3. 3Turn OFF "Sticky keys"
  4. 4Turn OFF "Toggle keys"
  5. 5Filter Keys can make the keyboard appear unresponsive
  6. 6It requires keys to be held for a period before registering

Solution 3: Check Hardware Connection

  1. 1If the keyboard works in BIOS but not Windows: it's a driver issue (use steps above)
  2. 2If the keyboard doesn't work in BIOS either: hardware issue
  3. 3For hardware issues on user-serviceable laptops:
  4. 4Power off, remove battery if possible
  5. 5Remove the keyboard (usually held by clips or screws)
  6. 6Reseat the ribbon cable connector
  7. 7If liquid spill: keyboard may need replacement ($20-50 for most laptop keyboards)
