How to Fix Ethernet Running Slower Than Expected on Windows

Gigabit Ethernet only running at 100Mbps or 10Mbps? Fix slow wired network speeds, speed negotiation issues, and Ethernet performance problems.

How to Fix No Internet Connection

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Ethernet shows 100Mbps instead of 1Gbps in adapter status
  • Speed test shows much lower than expected wired speed
  • File transfers to NAS or other PCs are painfully slow
  • Ethernet speed fluctuates between fast and slow
  • Internet speed fine on WiFi but slow on Ethernet
  • Adapter shows "10 Mbps" or "100 Mbps" in network properties

Common Causes

  • Cat5 cable (not Cat5e/Cat6) limiting to 100Mbps
  • Cable damaged or with a bad crimp
  • Switch/router port only supports 100Mbps
  • Auto-negotiation failing — adapter negotiating lower speed
  • Ethernet driver issue or power management throttling
  • Duplex mismatch (half-duplex instead of full-duplex)

Solutions

Solution 1: Check Cable and Hardware

  1. 1Check your Ethernet cable category: Cat5e or Cat6 required for 1Gbps
  2. 2Cat5 (no "e") only supports 100Mbps — replace with Cat5e or Cat6
  3. 3Try a different Ethernet cable to rule out cable damage
  4. 4Check your router/switch port — ensure it's a Gigabit port
  5. 5Many cheap switches only have 100Mbps ports
  6. 6Check cable length — Ethernet spec is max 100 meters (328 ft)

Solution 2: Force Gigabit Speed

  1. 1Open Device Manager > Network adapters
  2. 2Right-click Ethernet adapter > Properties > Advanced tab
  3. 3Find "Speed & Duplex" setting
  4. 4Change from "Auto Negotiation" to "1.0 Gbps Full Duplex"
  5. 5Click OK and test speed
  6. 6If connection drops: revert to Auto Negotiation (cable or switch doesn't support Gbps)

Solution 3: Optimize Ethernet Driver

  1. 1In adapter Advanced properties:
  2. 2Disable "Energy Efficient Ethernet" (saves power but reduces speed)
  3. 3Disable "Green Ethernet" if present
  4. 4Set "Receive Buffers" and "Transmit Buffers" to maximum
  5. 5Enable "Jumbo Packet" (set to 9014) if your switch supports it
  6. 6Update Ethernet driver from your motherboard manufacturer's website
