You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Red X on mapped network drive in File Explorer
  • "The specified network name is no longer available"
  • Network drive connects but disconnects after minutes
  • Cannot access shared folders on NAS or other PCs
  • "Windows cannot access \\server\share" error
  • Network drives don't reconnect after restart

Common Causes

  • SMB 1.0 disabled but required by older NAS/devices
  • Saved credentials expired or incorrect
  • Network discovery turned off
  • DNS resolution failing for server name
  • Firewall blocking SMB ports (445, 139)

Solutions

Solution 1: Reconnect with Fresh Credentials

  1. 1Open Command Prompt
  2. 2Run: net use * /delete (removes all mapped drives)
  3. 3Press Windows + R, type \\servername\sharename
  4. 4Enter username and password when prompted

  6. 6Right-click the share > Map network drive
