How to Fix Slow Disk Read/Write Speeds on Windows

Hard drive or SSD file transfers extremely slow? Fix slow copy speeds, low disk throughput, and degraded drive performance on Windows.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix 100% Disk Usage

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • File copy speeds much slower than expected
  • SSD performing like an HDD
  • Large file transfers stall at 99% or slow to a crawl
  • CrystalDiskMark shows low read/write scores
  • Disk activity light constantly on but transfers are slow
  • USB 3.0 drive transferring at USB 2.0 speeds

Common Causes

  • Drive running in PIO mode instead of DMA/AHCI
  • SATA controller set to IDE mode instead of AHCI in BIOS
  • SSD TRIM not enabled or not running
  • Drive fragmentation (HDDs only)
  • Disk nearly full (SSDs slow down when >80% full)
  • Background processes using disk bandwidth

Solutions

Solution 1: Check Drive Health and Mode

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Run: wmic diskdrive get model,status,interfacetype
  3. 3Verify drives show "OK" status
  4. 4Download CrystalDiskInfo (free) to check SMART health
  5. 5Look for: Reallocated Sectors, Current Pending Sectors
  6. 6If either is high: the drive is failing — back up immediately

Solution 2: Optimize SSD Performance

  1. 1Open "Defragment and Optimize Drives" (search in Start)
  2. 2Select your SSD — it should show "Solid state drive"
  3. 3Click "Optimize" — this sends TRIM commands (not defrag)
  4. 4Ensure weekly optimization is scheduled
  5. 5Verify AHCI mode: Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
  6. 6You should see "AHCI" in the controller name, not "IDE"

Solution 3: Fix Slow USB Drive Speeds

  1. 1Ensure the USB drive is plugged into a USB 3.0 port (usually blue)
  2. 2Open Device Manager > Disk drives
  3. 3Right-click the USB drive > Properties > Policies
  4. 4Select "Better performance" (enables write caching)
  5. 5Note: with this setting, always "Safely remove" the drive
  6. 6Also try a different USB cable — cheap cables limit speed
