How to Fix Fix Remote Desktop Clipboard Not Working on Windows

Can't copy and paste between Remote Desktop and local PC? Clipboard sharing broken in RDP? Text and file copy not working in remote session? Fix RDP clipboard issues.

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Can't copy text from local PC to remote desktop session
  • Can't paste from remote desktop back to local machine
  • Clipboard worked before but stopped after reconnecting
  • File copy via clipboard between RDP and local fails
  • Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V work locally but not across the RDP boundary
  • Clipboard works one direction but not the other

Common Causes

  • rdpclip.exe process crashed or stopped running in the remote session
  • Clipboard redirection disabled in RDP connection settings or Group Policy
  • Remote Desktop session running in restricted mode
  • Third-party clipboard manager interfering with RDP clipboard
  • Windows clipboard service not running on remote machine
  • Group Policy blocking drive and clipboard redirection

Solutions

Solution 1: Restart the RDP Clipboard Process

  1. 1In the remote desktop session: open Task Manager
  2. 2Go to the Details tab
  3. 3Find "rdpclip.exe" — if it exists: right-click → End task
  4. 4If it doesn't exist: that's the problem
  5. 5Open CMD in the remote session
  6. 6Run: rdpclip.exe
  7. 7This restarts the clipboard redirection process
  8. 8Try copying and pasting again — it should work now
  9. 9If this fixes it temporarily: the process is crashing periodically

Solution 2: Enable Clipboard Redirection in RDP Settings

  1. 1On your LOCAL PC: open Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc)
  2. 2Click "Show Options" → go to "Local Resources" tab
  3. 3Under "Local devices and resources": ensure "Clipboard" is checked
  4. 4Click "More..." and check "Drives" if you need file copy support
  5. 5Click Connect to start the session
  6. 6If Clipboard was already checked: uncheck it, connect, disconnect, re-check it, and reconnect
  7. 7This forces a fresh clipboard channel

Solution 3: Check Group Policy on Remote Machine

  1. 1On the REMOTE machine: open gpedit.msc (if available)
  2. 2Navigate to: Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Session Host → Device and Resource Redirection
  3. 3Check "Do not allow clipboard redirection" — should be "Not Configured" or "Disabled"
  4. 4Check "Do not allow drive redirection" — same setting
  5. 5If either is set to "Enabled": change to "Not Configured"
  6. 6Run: gpupdate /force
  7. 7Disconnect and reconnect the RDP session
  8. 8Clipboard should now work in both directions
