Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • •Internet not working due to incorrect proxy settings
  • •Proxy settings reset every time you change them
  • •"Use a proxy server" keeps turning back on by itself
  • •Auto-detect settings causing slow page loads
  • •VPN left proxy settings enabled after disconnecting
  • •Proxy settings grayed out or locked

Common Causes

  • âš VPN software leaving proxy configuration active after disconnect
  • âš Malware or adware setting proxy to redirect traffic
  • âš Registry values stuck with old proxy settings
  • âš Group Policy enforcing proxy configuration
  • âš Auto-detect proxy (WPAD) causing 30-second delays on page loads
  • âš Corrupted Internet Settings registry key

Solutions

Solution 1: Disable Proxy Settings

  1. 1Go to Settings > Network & internet > Proxy
  2. 2Turn OFF "Automatically detect settings" (this causes slowness if no proxy exists)
  3. 3Turn OFF "Use a proxy server"
  4. 4If settings won't stay: check if a VPN is overriding them
  5. 5Disconnect and fully close any VPN software
  6. 6Try changing proxy settings again

Solution 2: Clear Proxy from Registry

  1. 1Open Registry Editor (regedit) as Administrator
  2. 2Navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
  3. 3Delete or set to 0: ProxyEnable
  4. 4Delete the value: ProxyServer (if present)
  5. 5Delete the value: ProxyOverride (if present)
  6. 6Close regedit and restart your browser

Solution 3: Reset All Proxy Settings via CMD

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Run: netsh winhttp reset proxy
  3. 3Run: netsh winhttp reset tracing
  4. 4This resets the system-wide WinHTTP proxy settings
  5. 5Browser-specific proxies may also need clearing:
  6. 6Chrome/Edge: Settings > System > Open your computer's proxy settings > verify all OFF
