How to Fix Proxy Settings Wrong, Auto-Config Broken, or VPN Residue on Windows

Internet not working because of wrong proxy settings, "Use a proxy server" stuck on, or VPN leftover configuration breaking connectivity? Fix proxy issues on Windows 10 and 11.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix No Internet Connection

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "Use a proxy server" enabled but you didn't set it
  • Internet doesn't work but network is connected — proxy error in browser
  • Chrome/Edge shows: "Checking the proxy and the firewall" then fails
  • Proxy settings keep coming back after disabling them
  • VPN was uninstalled but proxy settings remain
  • "Automatically detect settings" toggled off
  • PAC (Proxy Auto-Config) URL pointing to non-existent server

Common Causes

  • VPN client left proxy configuration after uninstall
  • Malware set proxy to intercept web traffic
  • Group Policy enforcing proxy settings
  • Proxy auto-detect (WPAD) failing on the network
  • Corporate proxy settings applied but not on corporate network
  • Browser-level proxy settings overriding system settings
  • Registry proxy values set incorrectly

Solutions

Solution 1: Disable Proxy in Windows Settings

  1. 1Settings → Network & internet → Proxy
  2. 2Under "Automatic proxy setup": toggle "Automatically detect settings" to ON
  3. 3Under "Manual proxy setup": click "Set up" → toggle "Use a proxy server" to OFF
  4. 4Click Save
  5. 5If settings revert: a program or policy is forcing them back (see below)
  6. 6Test internet immediately after disabling proxy

Solution 2: Clean Proxy Settings from Registry

  1. 1If proxy keeps coming back after disabling:
  2. 2Open Registry Editor (regedit) as Administrator
  3. 3Navigate to: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
  4. 4Set "ProxyEnable" to 0
  5. 5Delete "ProxyServer" value if it exists
  6. 6Delete "ProxyOverride" value if it exists
  7. 7Delete "AutoConfigURL" if it contains a suspicious URL
  8. 8Restart the browser and test

Solution 3: Remove VPN Leftover Configuration

  1. 1Uninstalled VPNs often leave proxy settings behind:
  2. 2Settings → Network & internet → VPN → remove any leftover VPN profiles
  3. 3Check for TAP/TUN virtual network adapters in Device Manager → Network adapters
  4. 4Uninstall any TAP-Windows or WireGuard adapters you don't need
  5. 5Run the VPN's official uninstaller/cleanup tool if available
  6. 6Reset network: netsh winsock reset && netsh int ip reset → restart
  7. 7This clears any networking configuration residue

Solution 4: Fix Malware-Set Proxy

  1. 1Malware commonly sets a proxy to intercept your traffic:
  2. 2Disable the proxy (Settings → Proxy → turn everything off)
  3. 3Run a full malware scan: Windows Security → Full scan
  4. 4Also scan with Malwarebytes (free) for a second opinion
  5. 5After cleaning: check proxy settings again — malware may re-enable it
  6. 6If proxy keeps returning: the malware is still active
  7. 7Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and scan from there
