Main Troubleshooting Guide
How to Fix No Internet Connection →Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions
Symptoms
You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:
- •"Use a proxy server" enabled but you didn't set it
- •Internet doesn't work but network is connected — proxy error in browser
- •Chrome/Edge shows: "Checking the proxy and the firewall" then fails
- •Proxy settings keep coming back after disabling them
- •VPN was uninstalled but proxy settings remain
- •"Automatically detect settings" toggled off
- •PAC (Proxy Auto-Config) URL pointing to non-existent server
Common Causes
- ⚠VPN client left proxy configuration after uninstall
- ⚠Malware set proxy to intercept web traffic
- ⚠Group Policy enforcing proxy settings
- ⚠Proxy auto-detect (WPAD) failing on the network
- ⚠Corporate proxy settings applied but not on corporate network
- ⚠Browser-level proxy settings overriding system settings
- ⚠Registry proxy values set incorrectly
Solutions
Solution 1: Disable Proxy in Windows Settings
- 1Settings → Network & internet → Proxy
- 2Under "Automatic proxy setup": toggle "Automatically detect settings" to ON
- 3Under "Manual proxy setup": click "Set up" → toggle "Use a proxy server" to OFF
- 4Click Save
- 5If settings revert: a program or policy is forcing them back (see below)
- 6Test internet immediately after disabling proxy
Solution 2: Clean Proxy Settings from Registry
- 1If proxy keeps coming back after disabling:
- 2Open Registry Editor (regedit) as Administrator
- 3Navigate to: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
- 4Set "ProxyEnable" to 0
- 5Delete "ProxyServer" value if it exists
- 6Delete "ProxyOverride" value if it exists
- 7Delete "AutoConfigURL" if it contains a suspicious URL
- 8Restart the browser and test
Solution 3: Remove VPN Leftover Configuration
- 1Uninstalled VPNs often leave proxy settings behind:
- 2Settings → Network & internet → VPN → remove any leftover VPN profiles
- 3Check for TAP/TUN virtual network adapters in Device Manager → Network adapters
- 4Uninstall any TAP-Windows or WireGuard adapters you don't need
- 5Run the VPN's official uninstaller/cleanup tool if available
- 6Reset network: netsh winsock reset && netsh int ip reset → restart
- 7This clears any networking configuration residue
Solution 4: Fix Malware-Set Proxy
- 1Malware commonly sets a proxy to intercept your traffic:
- 2Disable the proxy (Settings → Proxy → turn everything off)
- 3Run a full malware scan: Windows Security → Full scan
- 4Also scan with Malwarebytes (free) for a second opinion
- 5After cleaning: check proxy settings again — malware may re-enable it
- 6If proxy keeps returning: the malware is still active
- 7Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and scan from there
