How to Fix Black Screen on Startup

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Second monitor not detected — "Display not found" in Settings
  • Extended desktop not working — both screens show the same thing
  • Projector connected but shows "No signal"
  • Win+P menu options greyed out
  • External monitor detected but shows black screen
  • Resolution wrong or can't be changed on second monitor
  • Display arrangement wrong — mouse goes to wrong side

Common Causes

  • Cable not fully seated or damaged (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C)
  • GPU driver not recognizing the second display
  • Wrong display mode selected (Duplicate vs Extend)
  • Monitor set to wrong input source
  • USB-C port doesn't support video output (data-only port)
  • GPU doesn't support the number of connected displays
  • Display adapter or dock not compatible

Solutions

Solution 1: Detect Second Monitor

  1. 1Settings → System → Display → scroll down → "Detect"
  2. 2If not detected: check cable connections on both ends
  3. 3Try a different cable — cables can look fine but be damaged
  4. 4Try a different port on the GPU if available
  5. 5On the monitor: press Input/Source button → select correct input (HDMI 1, DP, etc.)
  6. 6USB-C: not all USB-C ports support video — check laptop specs

Solution 2: Set Display Mode

  1. 1Press Win+P to open projection menu:
  2. 2"PC screen only" — only laptop/main screen
  3. 3"Duplicate" — same image on both screens
  4. 4"Extend" — separate desktops on each screen (most common)
  5. 5"Second screen only" — only external monitor
  6. 6Choose "Extend" for dual monitor setup
  7. 7Then arrange displays: Settings → Display → drag monitors to match physical position

Solution 3: Fix Display Driver

  1. 1Update GPU driver: Device Manager → Display adapters → Update driver
  2. 2Or download latest from manufacturer: nvidia.com, amd.com, intel.com
  3. 3After updating: restart PC and reconnect monitor
  4. 4If driver update didn't help: try uninstall → restart → Windows reinstalls basic driver
  5. 5Then install fresh driver from manufacturer
