Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Slow Computer

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Applications run noticeably slower than expected
  • Task Manager shows "Efficiency mode" on apps you are using
  • CPU clock speed lower than rated even under load
  • Games or creative apps have reduced frame rates
  • Power throttling icon appears in Task Manager for active apps
  • Performance improves when plugged in but drops on battery

Common Causes

  • Windows Efficiency Mode enabled on foreground applications
  • Power plan set to power saver or balanced with aggressive throttling
  • Thermal throttling triggered by inadequate cooling
  • Battery saver mode active reducing CPU performance
  • Third-party power management software adding throttling
  • BIOS power settings limiting CPU package power

Solutions

Solution 1: Disable Efficiency Mode for Specific Apps

  1. 1Open Task Manager: Ctrl+Shift+Esc
  2. 2Go to Processes tab
  3. 3Find the affected application
  4. 4Right-click → uncheck "Efficiency mode" if checked
  5. 5The leaf icon indicates efficiency mode is active
  6. 6This only lasts for current session
  7. 7For permanent fix:
  8. 8Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode
  9. 9Set to "Best performance"
  10. 10This reduces aggressive throttling system-wide

Solution 2: Configure Power Plan for Performance

  1. 1Set high performance power plan:
  2. 2Control Panel → Power Options
  3. 3Select "High performance" (may need to click "Show additional plans")
  4. 4If not available, create it:
  5. 5CMD as Admin: powercfg -duplicatescheme 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c
  6. 6Advanced power settings:
  7. 7Click "Change plan settings" → "Change advanced power settings"
  8. 8Processor power management:
  9. 9Minimum processor state: 100%
  10. 10Maximum processor state: 100%
  11. 11System cooling policy: Active
  12. 12Disable battery saver: Settings → System → Power & battery → toggle off

Solution 3: Disable Power Throttling via Registry

  1. 1Disable power throttling system-wide:
  2. 2Win+R → regedit
  3. 3HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerThrottling
  4. 4If "PowerThrottling" key doesnt exist, create it
  5. 5Create DWORD "PowerThrottlingOff" = 1
  6. 6This disables all power throttling
  7. 7Check thermal throttling:
  8. 8If CPU temps exceed 90°C, throttling is thermal — clean fans/heatsink
  9. 9Use HWiNFO or Core Temp to monitor temperatures
  10. 10Check BIOS:
  11. 11Look for CPU power limits or "PL1/PL2" settings
  12. 12Set to maximum or "Unlimited" if available
  13. 13Restart PC
