How to Fix Network Reset Broke Internet — Lost Settings After Reset on Windows

Used "Network Reset" in Windows and now internet doesn't work, VPN is gone, or network adapters disappeared? Fix issues caused by a network reset.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix No Internet Connection

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • No internet after using Settings → Network → Network reset
  • WiFi adapter missing from Device Manager after reset
  • All VPN profiles and configurations deleted
  • Network drives and mapped shares no longer connect
  • WiFi passwords all gone — need to reconnect to every network
  • "No network adapters" showing in Settings
  • Ethernet adapter not detected after reset

Common Causes

  • Network reset removes and reinstalls ALL network adapters
  • Custom driver not reinstalled automatically after adapter removal
  • VPN virtual adapters (TAP/TUN) removed and not recreated
  • Static IP settings reverted to DHCP
  • Firewall rules for network apps reset to defaults
  • WiFi saved networks (passwords) intentionally cleared by reset
  • Third-party network software (VPN clients, etc.) broken by reset

Solutions

Solution 1: Reinstall Network Drivers

  1. 1After a network reset, Windows should reinstall drivers automatically
  2. 2If adapters are missing: restart the PC (this triggers driver reinstallation)
  3. 3If still missing after restart: Device Manager → Action → Scan for hardware changes
  4. 4For WiFi: download the driver from your laptop manufacturer's website on another device
  5. 5Transfer the driver via USB drive and install manually
  6. 6For Ethernet: the driver is usually built into Windows — a restart should fix it
  7. 7If Device Manager shows yellow exclamation marks: right-click → Update driver

Solution 2: Reconnect WiFi Networks

  1. 1Network reset clears all saved WiFi passwords:
  2. 2Click WiFi icon in taskbar → find your network → Connect → enter password
  3. 3If you don't remember the password:
  4. 4Check your router (password is often on a sticker on the bottom)
  5. 5Or: log into your router admin page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
  6. 6On another connected device: look up saved WiFi password in Settings
  7. 7You'll need to reconnect to each WiFi network individually

Solution 3: Restore VPN and Network Shares

  1. 1VPN profiles are deleted by network reset — you need to reconfigure:
  2. 2Reinstall your VPN client (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, etc.) — it will recreate its adapter
  3. 3For built-in VPN: Settings → Network → VPN → Add VPN → re-enter your configuration
  4. 4For mapped network drives: open File Explorer → right-click "This PC" → Map network drive
  5. 5Re-enter the network path (e.g., \\server\share)
  6. 6For static IP: Settings → Network → your adapter → Hardware properties → IP assignment → Edit → Manual
  7. 7Re-enter your IP address, subnet, gateway, and DNS

Solution 4: Alternative to Full Network Reset

  1. 1For future reference: try these targeted fixes BEFORE doing a full network reset:
  2. 2DNS only: ipconfig /flushdns
  3. 3Winsock only: netsh winsock reset (requires restart)
  4. 4TCP/IP only: netsh int ip reset (requires restart)
  5. 5Release/renew IP: ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew
  6. 6These fix most network issues without losing all settings
  7. 7Full network reset should be a last resort, not a first step
