Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Live Captions toggled on but no caption overlay appears
  • Caption window shows but no text is generated
  • Live Captions work for some audio sources but not others
  • Caption text appears garbled or extremely inaccurate
  • Live Captions setting is grayed out or unavailable
  • Caption window appears then disappears immediately

Common Causes

  • Live Captions language pack not downloaded
  • Audio output not being captured correctly
  • Accessibility settings misconfigured
  • Required Windows components missing or corrupted
  • Older Windows 11 version that does not support Live Captions
  • Hardware not meeting minimum requirements for on-device processing

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable and Configure Live Captions

  1. 1Open Settings → Accessibility → Captions
  2. 2Turn on "Live captions"
  3. 3If prompted, click "Download" for the language pack
  4. 4Wait for the download to complete
  5. 5Once enabled, the caption bar should appear at the top of the screen
  6. 6Click the gear icon in the caption bar for settings
  7. 7Adjust position, style, and filtering options
  8. 8Play audio to test caption generation

Solution 2: Update Windows to Latest Version

  1. 1Live Captions requires Windows 11 22H2 or later
  2. 2Open Settings → Windows Update
  3. 3Click "Check for updates"

  6. 6After update, try enabling Live Captions again
  7. 7Some features require specific cumulative updates

Solution 3: Reset Speech and Captions Components

  1. 1Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps
  2. 2Search for "Speech" related packages
  3. 3If any Speech runtime is listed, click Reset
  4. 4Open PowerShell as Administrator:
  5. 5Get-AppxPackage *Speech* | Reset-AppxPackage
  6. 6Also reset accessibility settings:
  7. 7Open Settings → Accessibility → Captions
  8. 8Toggle Live captions off, wait 10 seconds, then on again
  9. 9If language pack seems corrupted:
  10. 10Toggle off → Delete the language data when prompted → Toggle on to re-download
