  • Update rollback fails leaving software in broken state
  • Windows Installer shows rollback error in event log

  • Installer cache (.msi files) deleted by cleanup tools
  • Previous installation left inconsistent registry state

  • Conflicting versions of same software installed

Solutions

Solution 1: Repair Windows Installer Cache

  1. 1Windows Installer caches .msi files in:
  2. 2C:\Windows\Installer
  3. 3If cleanup tools deleted these: rollback can't work
  4. 4Never manually delete files from C:\Windows\Installer!
  5. 5To fix: repair the affected application:
  6. 6Settings → Apps → find the app → Modify → Repair
  7. 7This re-caches the necessary installer files
  8. 8For Office: Settings → Apps → Microsoft Office → Modify
  9. 9Choose "Online Repair" for thorough fix
  10. 10After repair: retry the update that failed

Solution 2: Clean Install the Affected Software

  1. 1If repair doesn't work — clean reinstall:
  2. 2First try normal uninstall:
  3. 3Settings → Apps → find app → Uninstall
  4. 4If uninstall also fails:
  5. 5Download Microsoft's Program Install/Uninstall Troubleshooter:
  6. 6aka.ms/diag_uninstall
  7. 7This can force-remove broken installations
  8. 8For Office: use SaRA tool (aka.ms/SaRA)
  9. 9After removal: restart PC
  10. 10Download fresh installer from the vendor
  11. 11Install clean — this includes latest patches
  12. 12No need for separate updates after fresh install

Solution 3: Fix Windows Installer Service

  1. 1Re-register Windows Installer service:
  2. 2CMD as Admin:
  3. 3msiexec /unregister
  4. 4msiexec /regserver
  5. 5This re-registers the MSI engine
  6. 6Also check the service is running:
  7. 7services.msc → Windows Installer → set to Manual
  8. 8Ensure it starts when needed (it auto-starts for installations)
  9. 9Clear temp installer files:
  10. 10Delete contents of %TEMP% folder
  11. 11Also clear: C:\Windows\Temp (files you can delete)
  12. 12Retry the installation after these fixes
