  • PDF thumbnails are blank or show generic PDF icon
  • Thumbnails load very slowly or only partially

  • Performance settings configured to disable thumbnails
  • Thumbnail database file (thumbcache) is locked or corrupted
  • Required codec or viewer for the file type is not installed
  • File Explorer visual effects disabled for performance

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Thumbnail Previews in Settings

  1. 1Open File Explorer → click the three dots menu → Options
  2. 2Go to the View tab
  3. 3Uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
  4. 4Click Apply → OK
  5. 5Also check: Win+R → sysdm.cpl → Advanced → Performance → Settings
  6. 6Under Visual Effects, ensure "Show thumbnails instead of icons" is checked
  7. 7Click Apply → OK
  8. 8Thumbnails should start appearing — give it a moment to generate them

Solution 2: Clear and Rebuild Thumbnail Cache

  1. 1Open Disk Cleanup: Win+R → cleanmgr
  2. 2Select C: drive → check "Thumbnails" → click OK → Delete Files
  3. 3Or manually clear the cache:
  4. 4Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  5. 5taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
  6. 6del /f /s /q /a %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*
  7. 7start explorer.exe
  8. 8Navigate to a folder with images — thumbnails will regenerate

Solution 3: Fix Specific File Type Thumbnails

  1. 1If only certain file types lack thumbnails:
  2. 2PDFs: Install Adobe Acrobat Reader or a PDF thumbnail handler
  3. 3Videos: Install K-Lite Codec Pack or LAV Filters for video thumbnails
  4. 4RAW photos: Install Microsoft Raw Image Extension from Microsoft Store
  5. 5PSD files: Install Adobe Photoshop or a PSD thumbnail previewer
  6. 6Check if the file type has a registered thumbnail provider:
  7. 7Some third-party viewers override Windows thumbnail handling
  8. 8Try setting the default app for the file type and restart Explorer
