How to Fix Slow Computer

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Images show generic icon instead of thumbnail preview
  • Videos show white/generic icon instead of frame preview
  • Thumbnails work for some files but not others
  • Thumbnails briefly appear then revert to icons
  • PDF thumbnails not showing in File Explorer
  • Thumbnail loading very slowly in large folders

Common Causes

  • Thumbnail cache corrupted
  • Folder view set to list/details instead of thumbnail view
  • "Always show icons, never thumbnails" option enabled
  • Disk Cleanup keeps clearing thumbnail cache
  • File type doesn't have a thumbnail handler registered
  • Thumbnail cache database too large or fragmented

Solutions

Solution 1: Enable Thumbnail Previews

  1. 1File Explorer → View → check that you're in a view that shows thumbnails
  2. 2Icons, Tiles, or Content view — not Details or List
  3. 3File Explorer → Options (or Tools → Folder options) → View tab
  4. 4UNCHECK "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
  5. 5Apply to all folders: "Apply to Folders" button
  6. 6Also check: Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings → Performance Settings
  7. 7Ensure "Show thumbnails instead of icons" is checked

Solution 2: Clear and Rebuild Thumbnail Cache

  1. 1Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) → check "Thumbnails" → Clean up
  2. 2Or CMD:
  3. 3taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
  4. 4del /f /s /q /a %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*
  5. 5start explorer.exe
  6. 6Navigate to a folder with images — thumbnails will regenerate
  7. 7This process can take a few minutes for large libraries

Solution 3: Fix Specific File Type Thumbnails

  1. 1PDFs: need a PDF reader that registers a thumbnail handler (Adobe Reader, SumatraPDF)
  2. 2Raw photos: install Microsoft Raw Image Extension from Store (free)
  3. 3HEIC images: install HEIF Image Extensions from Store
  4. 4Videos: ensure proper codecs installed — K-Lite Codec Pack or VLC
  5. 5PSD files: install Photoshop or a PSD thumbnail handler
  6. 6If a specific format never showed thumbnails: the app needs to register a handler
