Symptoms
You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:
- •"We can't sign into your account" notification at login
- •Desktop is empty — all files, shortcuts, and wallpaper are missing
- •Settings and customizations reset on every login
- •Files saved to desktop or documents disappear after restart
- •Event Viewer shows Event ID 1511: "Windows cannot find the local profile"
- •User profile folder shows as TEMP in C:\Users
Common Causes
- ⚠User profile registry hive (NTUSER.DAT) is corrupted
- ⚠Profile registry key has .bak extension causing Windows to create temp profile
- ⚠Disk space exhaustion preventing profile from loading
- ⚠Antivirus or group policy interfering with profile load
- ⚠Previous improper shutdown corrupted the profile
- ⚠Windows Update damaged the user profile during upgrade
Solutions
Solution 1: Fix Profile Registry Entry
- 1Log in with another admin account (or boot into Safe Mode)
- 2Open Registry Editor (regedit) as Administrator
- 3Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
- 4Look for entries with your user SID (the long S-1-5-21-... string)
- 5You may see two entries: one with .bak extension and one without
- 6If there are TWO entries for the same SID:
- 7Rename the one WITHOUT .bak to .old
- 8Remove the .bak extension from the other entry
- 9Set "State" DWORD to 0 in the corrected entry
Solution 2: Repair User Profile
- 1After fixing the registry entry, restart the computer
- 2Log in with the affected account — profile should load normally
- 3If files are missing, check C:\Users\TEMP for your data
- 4Copy files from TEMP profile to your real profile folder
- 5If no TEMP folder exists, check the original profile folder:
- 6C:\Users\YourUsername should still contain your files
- 7Verify profile loads correctly on subsequent restarts
- 8Run: sfc /scannow to ensure no system corruption remains
Solution 3: Create New Profile and Migrate Data
- 1If the profile is beyond repair:
- 2Create a new local admin account: Settings → Accounts → Other users → Add account
- 3Log into the new account
- 4Navigate to C:\Users\OldUsername
- 5Copy Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc. to the new profile
- 6Reinstall applications as needed in the new profile
- 7After verifying everything works, remove the old corrupted account
- 8Optionally: link the new account to your Microsoft account
