Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Pinned taskbar icons disappeared after restart or update
  • Taskbar shows blank/white squares instead of app icons
  • System tray icons (WiFi, volume, battery) missing
  • Taskbar is completely empty except for Start button
  • Icons reappear after restart but disappear again

Common Causes

  • Icon cache corrupted
  • Windows Explorer process glitch
  • Tablet mode or small taskbar icons setting
  • Windows Update reset taskbar configuration
  • User profile taskbar data corrupted
  • Group Policy hiding taskbar elements

Solutions

Solution 1: Rebuild Icon Cache

  1. 1Close all programs
  2. 2Open Task Manager → End task on "Windows Explorer"
  3. 3In Task Manager: File → Run new task → type cmd → check "Create this task with admin privileges"
  4. 4Run these commands:
  5. 5cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
  6. 6attrib -h iconcache_*.db
  7. 7del iconcache_*.db
  8. 8In Task Manager: File → Run new task → explorer.exe
  9. 9Icons will rebuild — may take a moment

Solution 2: Fix System Tray Icons

  1. 1If WiFi, volume, battery icons are missing:
  2. 2Settings → Personalization → Taskbar
  3. 3Under "Taskbar corner icons" — toggle ON the missing icons
  4. 4Under "Taskbar corner overflow" — check which icons appear
  5. 5For Windows 10: Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → "Turn system icons on or off"
  6. 6Ensure Clock, Volume, Network, Power are all ON
  7. 7If toggles are grayed out: Group Policy may be restricting them

Solution 3: Reset Taskbar Configuration

  1. 1If taskbar is completely broken:
  2. 2Delete taskbar layout cache:
  3. 3Close Explorer (Task Manager → End task)
  4. 4CMD: del /f /s /q %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar\*
  5. 5Restart Explorer: Task Manager → File → Run new task → explorer.exe
  6. 6Re-pin your apps to the taskbar
  7. 7Nuclear option: create new user profile → if taskbar works there
  8. 8Old profile's taskbar data is corrupted
