Symptoms
You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:
- •Windows Sandbox not listed in Optional Features
- •"Windows Sandbox" checkbox greyed out and can't be enabled
- •Sandbox starts but shows a black window then closes
- •"Windows Sandbox failed to start" error
- •"Hypervisor is not present" error when launching Sandbox
- •Sandbox was working but stopped after a Windows Update
- •Sandbox option available but launching causes blue screen
Common Causes
- ⚠Windows Home edition — Sandbox only available on Pro/Enterprise/Education
- ⚠Virtualization (VT-x/AMD-V) disabled in BIOS
- ⚠Hyper-V or Windows Hypervisor Platform not enabled
- ⚠Corrupted Sandbox component after update
- ⚠Third-party virtualization software conflicting (VirtualBox, VMware)
- ⚠Secure Boot or Device Guard settings interfering
- ⚠Insufficient RAM (Sandbox needs at least 4GB, 8GB recommended)
Solutions
Solution 1: Enable Virtualization in BIOS
- 1Restart → enter BIOS (F2, Del, or Esc depending on manufacturer)
- 2Look for: Intel VT-x, Intel Virtualization Technology, AMD-V, or SVM Mode
- 3Enable it → Save and exit BIOS
- 4After boot: verify in Task Manager → Performance → CPU → "Virtualization: Enabled"
- 5If already enabled in BIOS but Task Manager shows Disabled:
- 6Check if another hypervisor (VirtualBox, VMware) is interfering
- 7You may need to disable Hyper-V to use VirtualBox, or vice versa
Solution 2: Enable Windows Sandbox Feature
- 1Settings → Apps → Optional features → More Windows features (at bottom)
- 2Or: Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off
- 3Check these boxes: "Windows Sandbox", "Windows Hypervisor Platform"
- 4Also ensure "Virtual Machine Platform" is checked
- 5Click OK → Windows will install the components
- 6Restart when prompted
- 7After restart: search "Windows Sandbox" in Start menu and launch it
Solution 3: Fix Sandbox Not Starting
- 1If Sandbox shows error or closes immediately:
- 2Open CMD as Admin: dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Containers-DisposableClientVM /all /norestart
- 3Then: dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Hyper-V-All /all /norestart
- 4Restart the computer
- 5If still failing: check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for Sandbox errors
- 6Common fix: disable then re-enable Windows Sandbox in Optional Features
- 7Also try: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto (from Admin CMD) → restart
Solution 4: Resolve Conflicts with Other Virtualizers
- 1VirtualBox and VMware may conflict with Hyper-V/Sandbox:
- 2VirtualBox 6.1+: supports Hyper-V fallback — update to latest version
- 3VMware Workstation 15.5+: can coexist with Hyper-V — update if older
- 4If you need VirtualBox without Hyper-V: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off → restart
- 5To re-enable Sandbox later: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto → restart
- 6You can create separate boot entries to switch between modes
- 7Memory guard: Sandbox and other VMs running simultaneously need significant RAM (16GB+)
