How to Fix Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Memory Diagnostic stuck at a percentage for hours
  • Test never completes and PC restarts
  • Results don't appear after test completes
  • "Hardware problems were detected" result
  • Memory Diagnostic won't start from boot
  • Blue screens persist after diagnostic says RAM is fine

Common Causes

  • Faulty RAM stick causing test to hang
  • Memory Diagnostic results not persisting to Event Viewer
  • Extended test taking too long (can take 8+ hours)
  • BIOS memory settings (XMP) causing instability
  • RAM not fully seated in slot
  • Multiple RAM sticks with different speeds

Solutions

Solution 1: Run Memory Diagnostic Properly

  1. 1Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe
  2. 2Choose "Restart now and check for problems"
  3. 3After restart, the test will begin automatically
  4. 4Press F1 to change to "Extended" test for thorough checking
  5. 5Standard test takes ~20 minutes, Extended can take 2+ hours
  6. 6PC will restart with results when complete

Solution 2: View Diagnostic Results

  1. 1Results may not show as a notification — check Event Viewer
  2. 2Press Windows + R, type eventvwr.msc
  3. 3Go to Windows Logs > System
  4. 4Click Find (Ctrl+F) and search for "MemoryDiagnostics-Results"
  5. 5The event will show either "no errors" or detail the problems found

Solution 3: Physically Test RAM

  1. 1If diagnostic finds errors: shut down and unplug the PC
  2. 2Remove all RAM sticks
  3. 3Insert ONE stick at a time and run the diagnostic
  4. 4This identifies which specific stick is faulty
  5. 5Also try each stick in different slots
  6. 6Replace the faulty stick — mixing RAM brands can cause issues too
