📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Slow Computer

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • SearchIndexer.exe at high CPU in Task Manager
  • Constant disk activity from indexing
  • Search results incomplete or outdated
  • Indexing status says "Indexing paused" or stuck at X items
  • Laptop fan running constantly due to indexer
  • Search index size growing excessively large

Common Causes

  • Index database corrupted
  • Too many folders included in index scope
  • Large files or file types triggering excessive processing
  • Index rebuilding after Windows Update
  • Antivirus scanning indexed files simultaneously
  • Slow disk (HDD) struggling with index operations

Solutions

Solution 1: Rebuild the Search Index

  1. 1Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows
  2. 2Click "Advanced indexing options"
  3. 3Click "Advanced" button
  4. 4Under Troubleshooting, click "Rebuild"
  5. 5Confirm — this will take some time but fixes corruption
  6. 6Search may be incomplete during rebuild (normal)

Solution 2: Reduce Index Scope

  1. 1Open Indexing Options (Control Panel > Indexing Options)
  2. 2Click "Modify"
  3. 3Uncheck folders you don't need indexed
  4. 4Keep: Start Menu, Users folder
  5. 5Remove: large media libraries, development folders, downloads
  6. 6Click OK — the index will shrink and maintain faster

Solution 3: Pause or Throttle Indexing

  1. 1On laptops: indexing pauses on battery by default
  2. 2To manually pause: open Services (services.msc)
  3. 3Find "Windows Search" — right-click > Stop (temporary)
  4. 4For permanent throttling: set service to "Manual" startup
  5. 5Search will still work but only index when idle
  6. 6To completely disable: set to "Disabled" (search works but no indexing)
